Merlon is a magician-like character who has been featured in the games Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and will be reappering in Super Paper Mario. [1] Merlon is seemingly based-off the Shaman enemies of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.

In Paper Mario, Merlon lives in a large blue house with a spinning roof in Toad Town. Along with telling Mario his fortune for a fee, Merlon is needed to reach Pleasent Path for the first time, using his magic to clear the way of the disguised Koopa Bros. Later, after Tubba Blubba is defeated and Skolar is rescued, Merlon can be found sleeping outside of his house, if player's speak to him, he will tell them of an oracle who spoke to him and tell Mario of what the oracle told him. If Mario does what Merlon tells him, he will gain a badge. Much later in the game, Merlon, after meeting with a Ninji, will tell Mario to go to the Shiver Region. Players can also have Parakarry deliver a letter to Merlon, from his daughter, Merlee.

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Merlon appears in Rogueport near Professor Frankly's house. During the game, players can give Shine Sprites to Merlon in exchange, Merlon will upgrade a partner. If the Up Arrow from Hooktail Castle is obtained, it can be given to Merlon, who will use it to find an item that will allow him to upgrade Mario's partners further.

Merlon has been confirmed to appear in Super Paper Mario, this time, inhabiting the town of Flipside. So far it has been revealed that Merlon is the one who tells Mario of the Light Prognosticus and is the one who gives Mario his first Pure Heart.
