The Mercury Milan is a front-wheel drive mid-size sedan based on the Ford CD3 platform built by Ford Motor Company and distributed by the Lincoln-Mercury division. The Milan is an upscale version of its Ford cousin, the Ford Fusion, while being slotted below the luxury-spec Lincoln MKZ (formerly the Lincoln Zephyr) sedan.
Milan differs from Fusion by featuring unique front and rear fascia designs, larger rear doors, LED taillight clusters, projector head lamps and fog lamps, modified suspension, and an upgraded interior. The Milan filled the lineup gap following the discontinuation of both the Mercury Mystique in 2000 and the Mercury Sable in 2005. Milan is available in four packaged variants: Milan I4, Milan I4 Premier, Milan V6, and Milan V6 Premier . Both the Milan and Fusion, along with the MKZ, are derivatives of the Mazda 6 sedan, while only sharing 40% of its parts.
The Milan was unveiled at the 2005 Chicago Auto Show on February 9. Earlier, at the 2005 Detroit Auto Show, a hybrid version was announced for the 2008 model year. As the Ford Fusion Hybrid has been pushed back to 2008 as a 2009 model, the Mercury Milan hybrid will most likely not be seen until then.
The Milan four cylinder comes standard with a five-speed manual, and is available with optional five-speed automatic. All 2007 V6 Milans come equipped with the new six-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive (AWD) was added as an available option for the 2007 model year, but only for the V6 equipped vehicles. Additionally, a DVD navigation system has been added to the option list while a console-mounted MP3 auxilliary jack was added as a standard feature in all 2007 Milans built as "Job 2" cars (the MP3 jack is not present in 2007 Job 1 cars). Job 2 cars also enjoy an IIHS boost in safety rating by having had certain interior panels replaced with those of different materials, thus increasing the safety rating for side impact protection.
Pricing starts at $19,490 for the base model. "Premier" labeled vehicles are available in either four or six cylinder versions allowing buyers to get interior features (leather, cruise, power seat) and exterior features (17" wheels, fog lights, defroster mirrors) normally reserved for the larger (and more expensive) powertrain. Pricing of Premier models is on par with fully loaded Fusion cars (SEL trim).
