Merchant shipping

Merchant Shipping describes the commercial and trading ships and crews employed in a given country. According to tradition these ships may be incorporated as an auxiliary force in times of war.
It may be referred to as:
- The Merchant Marine - the term more frequently used in the United States
- The Merchant Navy - the term more frequently used in Commonwealth countries.
