A view of Lowell, Massachusetts from the east, near the confluence of the Merrimack and Concord Rivers. Photograph taken by William T. Whiting, Jr., January 2004.

This view of the former "Mile of Mills," along the Merrimack, from the foreground, shows the Massachusetts Mills, the Boott Cotton Mills, and the River Place Apartments towers on the site of the Merrimack Mills. Beyond that and not very visible, is the Lawrence Mills, ending the Mile. The Smokestack immediately to the left of River Place is the Wannalancit (Suffolk) Mills. The tall building on the far left with the blue sign on the roof is the former headquarters of the Lowell Sun in Kearney Square, and the green bridge is the Cox Bridge, carrying Bridge Street between downtown and Centralville.
