Meowth's Party

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Meowth's Party was a game planned to be released for the Nintendo GameCube some time in Quarter 1 of 2002, but it was cancelled. Only a few screenshots remain of the game. From the screenshots, it is apparent that the main character, Meowth, was entertaining guests at a party. It also seems that Meowth could use a red electric guitar and it seemed to be a vital component of the game. One gameplay aspect incorporated into the game was that Meowth could use certain Pokemon to his advantage, such as using a Snorlax's belly as a trampoline. The game was cancelled soon before its release, and there do not seem to be any plans to release once again. It is not fully known why the game was cancelled. The game was being worked on by the same team who created the Pokemon Stadium for the Nintendo 64

The Meowth in the game could very possibly be the same Meowth who stars in the anime series. Proof of this is that the Meowth is seen on its hind legs and is intelligent enough to play a guitar, traits that are shared by this Meowth and the one in the anime series (Though never is it ever mentioned in the anime that the Meowth knows how to play a guitar). However, in the anime is a villain, a member of Team Rocket with his fellow agents Jesse & James, whereas in the game he is the main character. This can be arguable, since the Meowth in the anime is not necessarily evil and working with Team Rocket because he wants to be a Team Rocket agent, but more because he wants to live life like a human. Also, the game did not seem to be a game with a storyline in particular, but more of a party game like the Mario Party series, in which case Meowth would not necessarily need to be the protagonist in the usual sense. A commercial in Japan for the game may have proved that the Meowth in Meowth's Party and the Meowth in the Pokemon anime to be one in the same with appearance of Jesse and James dancing with Meowth and their other Pokemon, Arbok & Weezing. [1]

In Super Smash Bros. Melee, there is a trophy of Meowth holding a red guitar, giving a possible hint to the fact that the Meowth on the trophy was the Meowth from Meowth's Party. The trophy description of the Meowth says that the Meowth's dream was to play the guitar. The guitar in the trophy is identical to that in many screenshots of Meowth's Party. Strangely enough, Super Smash Bros. Melee was released in 2001 with the trophy of Meowth being described as the trophy of the character starring in Meowth's Party. However, those playing this game never had the chance of figuring out why the Meowth was holding a guitar since the game was never released.

The game was shown in August 23, 2000 at the Spaceworld convention as a demo, along with a Legend of Zelda game and Metroid game. The game was not as graphically impressive as other titles being shown, but unlike many other games, Meowth's Party was interactive. The game showed many Pokemon from the original Pokemon Red and Blue versions as well as a few characters from Pokemon Gold and Silver versions. Many people believed that the demo was showing off a Pokemon game in development for the Gamecube, but later on the creators and developers may have decided to keep it as a demo instead of a full-fledged game because the idea of the game was not well received. However, one of the songs from a commercial for Meowth's Party was featured in Pokemon Channel. There may have been several characters from the actual anime involved in the game. One screenshot of the game shows a a group of Squirtle wearing sunglasses dancing, looking heavily like the Squirtle Squad featured in a few episodes of the first seasons.
