Mentone, Texas

Mentone is the only community in Loving County, Texas, the least populous county in the United States. As such it is, of course, the county seat.
Mentone is an unincorporated community. The current town was founded in 1931. Its greatest population was reached in 1933, when the town reported having 600 residents. The population has declined ever since, and in 2000 there were about 15 people, according to National Geographic Magazine. There are no cemeteries or hospitals in the entire town. It has a café and a gas station, but no other stores.
An earlier Mentone was founded south of the current town in 1893, but it was abandoned in 1905.
The town was named in tribute to Menton, France, by a French surveyor.

Mentone is served by the Wink-Loving Independent School District. Loving County's school system was closed and consolidated into Wink's ISD in 1972 because the enrollment had fallen to two pupils.
