Melur is a town and a municipality in Madurai district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The Lord Shiva Temple & goddess Draupathi,who was the wife of Pandavas are famous.The Pookkuli festival is celebrated every year by the Draupathi Amman Temple.The two important events are Biman - Keesakan Fight & the Pookkkuli.In the first event one person will be acting as Bima & other as Keesakan. The very appearance of Bima will have a terrifying effect on children.Keesakan will try to run away from Bima & the latter will chase him & kill him.The chase will go on in all main streets & it will be quite interesting to watch.On the Pookkuli day devotees who had already offered prayers to the Goddess will perform fire walking.Plough manufacturing & granite are the main industries.Agriculture is the main activity in Melur & surrounding Villages.

On the way to melur from Madurai, a nice place Othakkadai is placed, where there is a beautiful mountain is placed named Yanamalai.
