Melniks

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Melniks were a 1990s indie rock band Brisbane, Queensland Australia. The band was originally formed by John Swingle and Jason Cassidy. The name came from the Ramones manager - "Morty Melnik". The John Swingle led Melniks had various bassplayers (including Trevor Ludlow) until John quit the band to travel overseas. Jason "Cass" Cassidy kept the band alive recruiting guitarist and multi-distortion-pedal-aficionado James Straker and bassist Terry Devantier. When it was discovered James couldn't sing, Trent McNamara was recruited and so a new era of the Melniks began with Trent and Cass sharing the song-writing duties. The John Swingle Melniks released two cassettes - I was a cartoon pornstar and Melniks R Uncool. The Trent/Cass Melniks released three CD LPS - I know you are but what am i?, Have you ever noticed that Gordon from Sesame St looks almost exactly like Errol from Hot Chocolate?, Melnicks Schmelniks, plus an EP titled "Fairway to Seven" as well as two singles: Drew Romance and Chunky Doh/Anna. James left the band shortly before the Melniks recorded their final CD - "Fairway to Seven".

The band shot three film clips: "Carpet" which was filmed by the TV show Wonder World, "Drew Romance" and "Backdrop".

The first Melniks CD, "I know you are but what am i?" has some compositions credited to John Swingle.

The members of the Melniks have also appeared in many other bands such as Biro, Gentle Ben & his Sensitive Side, Small Fantasy, Cunningham and Van Lustbader.

Cass, Trevor and John formed a band called the "B-sides" in 2001 but this time around John played drums, Cass played guitar and sung and Trevor resumed his bass duties.
