Melinda Gordon moved to Grandview after she married Jim Clancy. She had always been able to speak with the dead or earthbound spirits. Her grandmother and mother both share her gift. When Melinda was a little girl, her father walked out of the family.

Melinda and her new husband, Jim, moved to the small town of Grandview. Once there Melinda opened a small antique shop. She met and became friends with Andrea Moreno. She trusted her new friend and business partner enough to tell her, her secret. At the end of the season, Andrea was killed in a plane crash.

[edit] Season 2

After losing her friend and business partner Andrea to a plane crash, Melinda succeeds against a new foe in helping her friend cross over. With Andrea gone, the relationship between Melinda and her husband begins to heat up once more, and new friends are met. First comes an occult professor, Rick Payne, who often helps Melinda with a troublesome ghost without realizing it. Next comes widow Delia Banks and her son Ned. After a few episodes, Melinda invites Delia to take the place of Andrea as her business partner, and confides in Ned about her gift. Last to know is Professor Payne, who finally has to be told.
