Melih Cevdet Anday (13 March 1915 - 29 November 2002), Turkish poet, writer who has been one of the forefront poets of the Garip movement together with Orhan Veli and Oktay Rifat .
His unique poetry stands outside the traditional poetic movements searching for new ways in poetry.
Their new poetry resolved to make itself simple, colloquial, matter of fact, an artless art designed to serve the common people.

[edit] His Life
He was born on 1915 in the city of Istanbul.
He has graduated from Ankara Gazi HighSchool and started working as a consultant for the Ministry of Education
He also worked as a journalist and written several articles for Aksam and Cumhuriyet newspapers
After 1954, he has worked as a teacher for the İstanbul Council Conservatory.
He has written several novels as well as translated several books into Turkish
During a career that has spanned six and a half decades, Melih Cevdet Anday published eleven collections of poems, eight plays, eight novels, fifteen collections of essays, a book of memoirs -- and won all of Turkey's poetry prizes.
In 1971, UNESCO honoured him -- along with such giants like Shakespeare,Dante, Tolstoy, Cervantes,etc.
His work has been translated into Russian, German, Hungarian, Romanian, and English (Rain One Step Away, trans. by Talat Halman and Brian Swann, Washington, DC, The Charioteer Press, 1980.)

On one of the banks of River Orontes
Mutawallis stood among his soldiers
And stared without stirring.
On the opposite bank, the Pharaoh
Ramses had mounted his chariot:
He stared straight ahead.
This is all we know about it.
Even though history tells it at length
This look is all that remains or can remain.

From a sea in bloom everything will burst
One day and be a forest.
From now on what you'll see is the soft hour
Of birds on the branches where they rest.
Wait for the god who waits around:
On blooded-red pines, the sun
Will claw till the great night comes on.
One day, all will be sound, such sound
As travels from star to cloud and to star from earthly things,
So its ellipse will spread with resounding chimes.
While you eye these rings,
Wait for the voice among voices to rebound.
Passing through organ-music, the hair-winged moon
Will come out quite soon.
I have lived in the wind.
Vertigo turned into lonely day. Alone,
My prophets were far-off rocks.
Neither forest nor sound, all by myself, windblown
Rain comforts the soul.
If not, godlike we must wait around
To hear a voice or any sound.
