Melgar is a Peruvian soccer club based in Arequipa, Peru, most often referred to as F.B.C."Melgar". It is one of Peru's oldest soccer teams, founded on March 25, 1915 by a group of soccer enthusiasts from Arequipa.
The team first participated in the Peruvian football league (Campeonato descentralizado) in 1919 in Lima and later was invited to the first truly national championship in 1966, when four teams from outside of the capital city were invited to join the championship, formerly played only by teams from Lima and Callao. Melgar won the Descentralizado championship for the first time in 1981 and again in 1983, but at that year the six better teams played an extra short tournament to decide the year champion and Melgar ended second. The team also won the Copa Peru in 1971, which rewarded them with the right to play in first division since then (In 1966 they were the only ones invited for the year). Melgar F.B.C. Melgar is, historically, the best soccer team, outside of Lima.
Their old home venue was the Estadio Melgar (20.000), but since the Estadio de la UNSA was founded in 1990, it has been its new home venue with a 40,217 spectator space. Their biggest rivalry is with Cienciano of Cuzco, the Southern Peruvian derby. In 2004 a group was born of fans in the USA fighting against the corruption of the inlaid leaders in the directory and of other bad partners who work with the delinquency, the website is www.xtranjeros.com and that until today continues fighting by the liberation of the club
