Melchior, the Guru of Life, is a non playable character (NPC) in the Squaresoft video game Chrono Trigger.

Early in the game Melchior appears as a swordsmith in 1000 A.D. Initially he plays a relatively minor role, hinting that you should come to "visit me sometime." However, Melchior resides on a continent out of the player's reach until a later point in the game. Melchior becomes a factor in the court hearing for the main character, Crono. Melchior plays a role in one of several actions you take after meeting Marle that can work against (or for) Crono. If one speaks to Melchior, he will ask the player to try and convince Marle to sell her pendant to him.

Because Melchior is a swordsmith, later in the game the player must see him again in an effort to repair the Masamune, the sword needed to defeat the wizard Magus. Melchior, shocked that you have the legendary Masamune, informs you that Dreamstone is necessary to fix the blade. Crono and his party travel back to the prehistoric era and obtain it, which Melchior uses to repair the Masamune.

It is later revealed that Melchior is not of 1000 A.D.; he is actually the Guru of Life, a respected personage of the Kingdom of Zeal. However, upon the awakening of Lavos he was drawn into a time portal, along with the Guru of Reason, the Guru of Time, and Janus. Whereas the Guru of Reason (Belthasar) was deposited some years before 2300 A.D., the Guru of Time (Gaspar) went to the End of Time, and Janus (later known as Magus) went to some years before 600 A.D., Melchior was sent to some years before 1000 A.D.

It is evident that up to this point Queen Zeal has considered the Gurus (and perhaps her own children) a threat to her power, and their final banishment across time is the manner of convenient disposal that she desires. But even before this Melchior and the other Gurus had been imprisoned or silenced in some manner. Though the player does not directly explore the circumstances surrounding the others, Melchior is actually freed by Crono and the party. For having opposed the Queen, he was imprisoned within a crystal shell at the top of Mount Woe, a floating peak that was chained to the earthbound village far below the Kingdom of Zeal. Upon defeating the mountain's guardian, Giga Gaia, the party rescues Melchior whereupon it becomes apparent that he has no recollection of whom Crono or the others are. Of course, it must be understood that in the age of Zeal, Melchior has not yet been sent to 1000 A.D., and he cannot possibly have met them at that moment. However, instinctively trusting Crono and the others, this "past Melchior" agrees to assist in the attack on the newly-completed Ocean Palace. He plays an integral role in the apparent destruction of the Mammon Machine.

Foreshadowing his later role as a swordsmith, Melchior presents Crono with a “ruby knife”. This is said to be made of the same stone as the Mammon Machine, and is capable of destroying it. As Crono lodges the blade into the machine, the knife is transformed into a sword, which one of the characters (depending on who is in the party during the cut scene) recognizes as the Masamune. It’s also noticeable that Masa and Mune, the two spirits of the sword, speak as the blade is about to be thrust into the machine. This asserts Melchior as the original maker of the Masamune. Melchior’s claim that the Masamune is made of dreamstone also seems to indicate that the “ruby knife” and the Mammon Machine are also constructed of the same material as well.

Melchior plays other roles in some side quests near the end of the game. Notably, he examines the Rainbow Shell and uses it to construct powerful weapons and armor for the party. He can also utilize the Sun Stone to create a powerful alloy, with which he creates the Rainbow, Crono's ultimate weapon.

In the Japanese version, Melchior is known as Bosh.
