Melanochromis is a genus of fish from the family Cichlidae endemic to Lake Malawi. The genus was established by Ethylwynn Trewavas in 1935 and contains 24 species (at present). Melanochromis are typically small, elongate fishes with longitudinal stripes. They are members of the mbuna group of Lake Malawi cichlids. They are very aggressive, particularly amongst conspecifics and similarly patterned heterospecifics.
