Mel and the Party Hats
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mel and the Party Hats was a popular cover band, based in Nashville and playing gigs mostly throughout the South, starting in the mid 1980's. The band played small dance clubs and could also be booked for special events. Through the late 1980's, the band would occasionally try out original songs with its audience -- "Mel" himself, at breaks between sets, would chat with people in the crowd, looking for feedback on the songs -- but the band was appreciated for rocking covers of popular songs. Steppenwolf's "Magic Carpet Ride" was a signature song for the band in the late '80's.
"Mel" of Mel and the Party Hats is a former stockbroker named Hunter Armistead, who in 1985 took the plunge and formed a band. The rest of the band members changed over the years and Armistead was always the focus of the group. Not handsome but charismatic, Mel played to nerdiness with glasses and usually a dorky hat on stage, but also possessed a kinetic and athletic stage presence.
Mel apparently retired from the band in 1999. According to an interview Armistead gave to Red and Black, a University of Georgia student newspaper, Armistead wanted a break from music to spend more time at home with family and pursue other interests.[1] The retirement seems to have been short-lived and Armistead still performs from time to time and the band can be booked through its website.[2]
