Originally a banker, he wrote a column on survival weapons for Guns and Ammo magazine. Upon moving to Rogue River, Oregon, he became an influential leader of the Survivalist movement, also known as the modern Preparedness Movement. Tappan on Survival was published shortly after his death from congestive heart failure at age 47; it was reissued by Paladin Press in 2006 with a new foreword by Bruce D. Clayton.
