Mel Lastman Square is a civic square at North York Civic Centre in the North York community of the city of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is named for former North York mayor (and later Toronto mayor) Mel Lastman.
The square is a busy and influential area, offering year-round activities. Amidst North York's bustling business sector, the square serves as a daily retreat in which to relax and eat lunch.
Surrounded by Yonge St on the east, the TDSB headquarters on the south, North York Centre on the west, and the Central Library to the north, Mel Lastman Square is at the heart of North York. It is tucked away from busy Yonge Street, the square is located in an ideal spot for city activities. The sunken location is intended to provide shelter and segregation, so that activities can take place away from the busy traffic on Yonge Street.
A man-made stream runs from the fountain under a large sign at Yonge street down into the large concrete square. Planters, trees, shrubs and wooden benches surround the area. A large pool is located in the center of the square that serves as a relaxing focal point in the summer and a great winter skating rink.
The square includes an outdoor ice rink, and outdoor theatre and hosts a number of community events, including jazz festivals. Events include: outdoor concerts, a farmer's market, cultural festivals, Canada Day festivities, ice skating, Winterfest and numerous family events.
