Megayanma (メガヤンマ? Megayanma in original Japanese language versions) is one of the 493 fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion-dollar[1] Pokémon media franchise – a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media, created by Satoshi Tajiri. Megayanma is famous for being the evolved form of Yanma, a Pokémon from a previous generation and for appearing in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. The purpose of Megayanma in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.[2]

Its Japanese name is a portmanteau of the words Meganeura and dragonfly (蜻蜓 yanma?).

Biological characteristics

Megayanma resembles a dragonfly, but a more vicious one than Yanma. It looks very much like Yanma, with the main difference being that the placement of the green and red colors have been switched. It also has the characteristics of a jumbo jet (window-like eyes and markings,a tail similar to an aircraft's). Megayanma is based on the Meganeura, an ancient dragonfly that grew to huge proportions.

In the video games

Megayanma evolves from Yanma by leveling up while it knows Ancientpower. According to the Pokédex, ultrasonic waves coming from Megayanma's wings can cause lethal damage to a foe's internal organs. This is possibly a reference to the Godzilla foe Megaguirus, which is also based on the Meganeura, which have sonic wing attacks and a similar tail. Yanma retains the ability Speed Boost when evolving; the ability Compoundeyes on Yanma corresponds to Megayanma's Color Glasses ability. The Color Glasses ability doubles the damage it does to a foe if the attack wasn't very effective.

Megayanma has high Special Attack and Speed stats, but suffers from a below average Special Defense.
