Megara (mythology)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Greek mythology, Megara (in Greek: Μεγάρα) was the oldest daughter of Creon, king of Thebes. She married Heracles and later his nephew Iolaus. There is a poem about her, usually attributed to Moschus.

[edit] Marriage to Heracles

In reward for defending Thebes in battle, Creon offered Megara to Heracles. Together they had three sons, although it is said that they had up to eight. Hera struck Heracles with temporary madness in which he killed them. In order to atone his guilt, he was forced to perform the Twelve Labours.

  • In the animated film Hercules, Megara (Susan Egan) plays a major part. Her friends call her "Meg" and Hades calls her "nutmeg". She falls in love with Hercules, but is actually working for Hades, because she sold her soul in order to save a former lover, whom subsequently abandoned her. A later episode of the animated series seems to show it was Adonis, a rival of Hercules. Her Disney version appears again in Kingdom Hearts II as a character in the Olympus Colosseum world.
  • In Kingdom Hearts 2 she is trying to ask Hades to give Hercules a break from the fighting but is attacked by Heartless. Sora and co. save her and she asks them a favor. Later you have to fight Pete while saving her. There is a damage bar for Megara which, if fully accumulates she will die and it is game over.
