Where is the issue taking place?
Holy Roman Empire article
Who's involved?
Myself and the editor Sandertje primarily
What's going on?
The dispute concerns the names for the Holy Roman Empire. For most of its history the article has featured the German and Latin translation of this name in the first paragraph. Sandertje opposes and has been making frequent reverts to the page. His reasons in my opinion and that of another editor who agreed are not convincing. The old names in Latin and German have not been much of a problem before and there are reasons for including both names in my opinion. But I think the issue could start an edit war and could get out of hand.
What would you like to change about that?
I suggested a poll but the other party does not agree. I am open to other suggestions and opinions to figure out where to go from here.
If you'd prefer we work discreetly, how can we reach you?
no
Would you be willing to be a mediator yourself, and accept a mediation assignment in a different case?

no

This is, following the Categorical Imperative, the idea that you might want to do
what you expect others to do. You don't have to, of course, that's why it's a question.

[edit] Evidence

Please report evidence in this section with {{Wikipedia:Mediation_Cabal/Evidence}} for misconduct and {{Wikipedia:Mediation_Cabal/Evidence3RR}} for 3RR violations. If you need help ask a mediator or an advocate. Evidence is of limited use in mediation as the mediator has no authority. Providing some evidence may, however, be useful in making both sides act more civil.
Wikipedia:Etiquette: Although it's understandably difficult in a heated argument, if the other party is not as civil as you'd like them to be, make sure to be more civil than him or her, not less.

This section is for listing and discussing compromise offers.

[edit] Discussion

I suppose this is the place to add my point of view?

The article is about the Holy Roman Empire of the German nation, this German part alone creates a lot of misconceptions, especially with laymen who are just interested in the subject but that's the way the GermanIC empire is called nothing to change there to prevent misconceptions. The introduction text read the following: ______________________________________________________________________________________________

The Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation (Latin Sacrum Romanum Imperium Nationis Germanicae, German Heiliges Römisches Reich Deutscher Nation) was a political conglomeration of lands in Central Europe in the Middle Ages and the early modern period.ETC ______________________________________________________________________________________________

Then a few lines down it says: ______________________________________________________________________________________________

The name of the Empire, in various (modern successor) languages spoken within its confines:

  • Croatian: Sveto rimsko carstvo njemačkoga naroda
  • Czech: Svatá říše římská, later: Svatá říše římská národa německého
  • Dutch: Heilige Roomse Rijk, later Heilige Roomse Rijk der Duitse Natie/Volkeren
  • French: Saint Empire Romain Germanique
  • German: Heiliges Römisches Reich [ˈhaɪlɪgəs ˈrøːmɪʃəs raɪç] listen  , later Heiliges Römisches Reich deutscher Nation [ˈhaɪlɪgəs ˈrøːmɪʃəs raɪç ˈdɔɪtʃɐ nɑˈʦjoːn]
  • Hungarian: Német-Római Császárság
  • Italian: Sacro Romano Impero
  • Latin: Sacrum Romanum Imperium, later Sacrum Romanum Imperium Nationis Germanicae

______________________________________________________________________________________________

Clearly languages, spoken within the Holy Roman Empire and/or their modern counterparts, are mentioned further on in the article. It doesn't mean anything that the a form of high German (Early New High German) was spoken most within a political association, because in the final centuries it was hard to call the "Empire" an empire, it does not make it more special than all the other languages.Same thing for latin. German and Latin, like all the other languages are mentioned further on in the article, just like any other language. If the opposing party thinks that it's so important to add that in the final hundred or what years early new high german was the most spoken language of the holy roman empire then just add it behind the German translation.

I want the Modern high German and latin translations to be removed from the introduction because of this. Sander 14:47, 7 April 2006 (UTC)
