[edit] County Status

are we a "county" ???

Yes. See [1], which says that 'The district of the Medway Towns shall cease to form part of Kent.

', and 'a new county shall be constituted comprising the district area of the Medway Towns and shall be named the county of the Medway Towns.'. The term is rarely used, though. Morwen 13:25, Jan 15, 2004 (UTC)

Ahh cheers - still see a lot of Kent and Medway though, Bromley and Bexley don't do that........

[edit] Urban sprawl

I have amended the opening paragraph which is, to say the least, somewhat scathing about what Medway is! " ... an area of urban sprawl ... " is hardly a very apt soubriquet for what is now applying to be a city in its own right! In any case that could be applied to any other settlement of any size in the UK, so to put it as the opening sentence of the opening paragraph doesn't really help readers to understand its growth. And then it goes on to say "near an environmentally significant wetlands region" when that region is to a large degree contained within that "urban sprawl"! Any Wikipedia article worth its salt doesn't denigrate its subject to that degree at the opening of the article. Peter Shearan 18:31, 3 August 2005 (UTC)

I also notice that, although the Medway website is used as one of the external links, much of the historical & other background is missed from the article. Examples - no mention of the Army at all; little about the Council itself, just the way it has evolved; no mention of the parishes within the area (but then it is an "urban sprawl" - a trip to the Riverside Park at Rainham would dispel that!); and where is the figure of 50% working in London taken from? [edit] Brompton one of the five towns ?

i don't think we should have brompton as 1 of the 5 main medway towns. i personally and every1 i know when u ask them what the 5 medway towns r, they say strood, rochester, chatham, gillingham and rainham. most ppl consider brompton a part of chatham. i will edit the article from this:

The five town involved in the conurbation are: Rochester, Chatham, Brompton, Strood, and Gillingham. The towns now form a single Borough of Medway, a unitary authority governed by Medway Council in Strood. This administrative area covers several neighbouring towns, some now absorbed into the conurbation, and rural villages (see lists below). It also includes parts of the North Kent Marshes, an environmentally significant wetlands region with several Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs).

to:

The five main towns involved in the conurbation are (from West to East in terms of geographical position): Strood, Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, and Rainham. many smaller towns and villages such as Frindsbury, Brompton, Walderslade, Luton, Wigmore etc, lie within the conurbation with a few villages outside the main urban area such as Hoo, Cliff and Grain around the area of the Hoo peninsula to the north of the main towns and villages such as Cuxton, Halling and Wouldham in the Medway gap area to the south of Rochester. Other similar areas of conservation include Ranscombe Farm between Strood and Cuxton with environmentally important rare woodland flowers and orchids.

since this talk page is not active i will edit it without consensus but if anyone objects i would be more than happy to compromise and discuss.

[edit] royal marines

i know that the royal marines were based there until the dockyard closed. all 3 dockyards of Chatham, devenport and portsmouth had baracks, each with their own different bands and songs asscociated with them.

it would appear as the quarry is only being filled in a little - what will the view be like?!--Screen42 01:43, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

Is this the huge hole in the gournd on the left , as you go up the A228 into Strood from M2, J2 ??? Pickle 16:22, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] transport section

im adding it, will need more help though. particularly people who know about the gillingham/rainham end of medway

Pratj 18:42, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

What do you wnat to know ? Pickle 10:47, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
well, since u live over there (i assume u do lol) i thought that u would have a much better idea of the roads, rail etc over that side of medway. if i do some of the transport section could u edit and contribute as u see fit. thx. btw, did u go to Rochester Math school? Pratj 12:10, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
I do, just have never got aorund to doing a lot of edits on lcoal stuff. I just did a big rewirte of Walderslade. I can sit down and write a transport section no problem. I was at the Math 1996 to 2003. Pickle 15:35, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
cool, i think he math article needs padding out.
anyway, do u want me to write the transport section or do u want too? Pratj 15:57, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
OK had a go, 1700+words latter here it is. Might be too focused on the actual roads rather than the transport layout. The controversial Chatham ring road isn't touched on (maybe it should in the Chatham article). I think the rail bit is more there, as its an area i did a lot of digging to write.
I've padded out the Math article recently, but its history focused and i haven't got much to hand to cite to other than my memories.Pickle 19:43, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
Nice transport section, impressive. i did the rochester bridge article and am doing the medway tunnel article tommorow (hopefully). i havn't read it all but is there anything on the new dual carriage way along the isle of grain Pratj 22:00, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
A228 - Done a short bit, there has been several news article in recent week sin local papers so i might be able to get some references in. Also expanded the rail bit to include Cuxton and Halling stations on the Medway valley line (not Medway Towns but Medway UA area). If thats to be the geographic extent of the article then a mention needs to be made of the good line to the isle of grain that once had passenger services. Pickle 06:15, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
Do we always need to cite sources. im sure the fact that both of us live in the area and that there is no dispute of accuracy will be fine. ive added a bit to the A228 part. anyway, nice section Pratj 15:43, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
Its good practise and while i know it because I've lived here all my life i need to prove it by allowing others who don't to check my facts - saying that its a lot of grief unless its about current events where you have the source infront of you ;) Pickle 17:40, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Buses

Forgot to talk about these, should add Arriva buying out Maidstone and District, almost sole provider of local bus transport. there did used to be "Mercury" (IIRC) not sure if they are left (ie info on others needed - don't know if stagecoach east Kent come up this far). nu-venture run the odd park and ride (also something to talk about - i only know about the airport to pentagon one). commuter coaches to London will also need a mention - i thinks thats mainly Kings Ferry (especially down here in Walderslade / lordswood) but Chalkwell might do something rainham way (there must be more). Pickle 19:22, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

good ideam there was amberlee and ASD coaches had some bus services. Pratj 20:56, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Medway UA vs Medway Towns

IMHO this article should be divided between the part about the Medway Unitary Authority (ie the local gov side) that covers the 5 towns and the rural areas of the Hoo peninsular and Cuxton / Halling and Medway Towns - ie the specific urban area of the 5 towns which would go into more depth about the towns (which each have their own articles). IMHO the stuff I'm writing about transport doesn't need to have "but" line referring to isolated rural communities when i feel i should be solely talking about the urban conurbation that is Medway. as a side point i live in part of the Medway Towns that isn't in the Unitary authority of Medway! - parts of Walderslade (bits of Walderslade Woods, Blue Bell Hill and Lordswood) are situated in Kent proper (Tonbridge and Malling BC and Maidstone BC). what are the various contributors / watchers opinions on this ? Pickle 07:33, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

i know that a part of stroo where i live came under cobham parish and gravesham police, though had an 01634 phone number. im not sure what the deal with that was. Pratj 14:41, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
