Medallion

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A medallion is a piece of metal, usually carved or engraved; circular (like a coin) and large, that is used as a work of art, souvenir, medal, or worn on the body as a special symbol.

Sometimes, small circular pieces of cooked meat are also called medallions.

In some US cities, (most notably New York) the permit granted by the government to operate a vehicle for hire, such as a taxi, is called a medallion. In other jurisdictions this permit is called a certificate of public convenience and necessity.
