Meanas

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Meanas is a fictional realm in Steven Erikson's fantasy series Malazan Book of the Fallen.

Meanas is the Warren of Shadow and Illusion, the mortal form of the Elder Warren of Shadow, Kurald Emurlahn. The Realm of Shadow is a confusing place, ever shifting, and the paths within it are littered with various prisoners who beg for mercy from their eternal imprisonment. It is ruled by the Ascendant known as Ammanas Shadowthrone, and his companion Cotillion, the Patron of Assassins.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The Shadow Throne had been unoccupied for millennia after the shattering of Kurald Emurlahn, and the entire Warren is said to now be human-aspected due to the Throne being occupied by Ammanas, who was once the mortal man Kellanved, the Malazan Emperor.

Along with Shadowthrone and Cotillion, there were also seven Hounds of Shadow, though several have been slain since the beginning of this series.

In the latest book, The Bonehunters, the Tiste Edur renegade Trull Sengar is revealed to hold the newly created Knight of High House Shadow position during a game in which the Deck of Dragons is played.

Hierarchy of High House Shadow
King - Shadowthrone/Ammanas
Queen - Unoccupied
Assassin - The Rope/Cotillion
Magi - Iskaral Pust
Hound - The Hounds of Shadow (Five remain as of The Bonehunters)
Knight - Trull Sengar (As of revelations in The Bonehunters)
