Mead School District No. 354 is a public school district located north of Spokane, Washington. Approximately 9,000 students attend the 13 schools in the district which consists of 2 high schools, an alternative high school, 2 middle schools, and 7 elementary schools, and the Five Mile School House. The Superintendent of the Mead School District is Dr. Thomas Rockefeller, who took office on July 1st, 2006.

[edit] High Schools

The Mead School District's newest school, Mt. Spokane High School, which opened in 1997.

Mt. Spokane and Mead are both successful in music and sports in both state and national competitions. The students of each high school consider the other as a rival.

Northwood Middle School, west of the Newport Highway next to Farwell Elementary (historically Mead Junior High, Mead Middle School and Northwood Junior High)
Mead Middle School, east of the Newport Highway, (historically Mead Senior High and Mead Junior High). This is the district's oldest school buliding and the only one that is actually in Mead.

As a result of the $37.7M bond passed by voters in 2004, the Mead School District has started numerous projects to enhance learning district-wide. The enhancements include the installation of Multimedia LCD Projectors in every classroom in the district, wirless internet access in classrooms, and the purchase of several Computers-on-Wheels (COWS).

[edit] Projects Underway

The first is the construction of the district's 8th elementary school on the Five Mile Prairie in order to relieve overcrowding in the district's current 7 elementary schools. The school is currently under construction and is expected to be ready to occupy for the 2007-2008 school year.
The second major project is constructing a replacement for Mead Middle School. The existing building is more than 90 years old, and has reached the end of its useful life. The new school will not be built on the same site, but rather a few miles north behind Colbert Elementary. The fate of the existing building has not been decided yet, though it will likely be demolished. Construction of the New Mead Middle School started in October 2006, and is expected to wrap up in time for the 2008-2009 school year.
