McWatt

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

McWatt is a character in Joseph Heller's classic novel Catch-22.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

McWatt is the pilot of Yossarian's plane, and is known for performing highly dangerous maneuvers. He loves to fly very low near Yossarian's tent, thus scaring Yossarian white and making him mad. He has a very flippant view of life as his catch phrase is, "Oh well, what the hell!" McWatt lives in a tent with Clevinger and later Nately, next to Havermeyer's tent.

McWatt was the craziest combat man of them all probably, because he was perfectly sane and still did not mind the war.

He commits suicide by crashing his plane into a mountain after he accidentally kills the character Kid Sampson by cutting him in half with the propellers of his plane, presumably saying, "Oh well, what the hell," as he flies into the cliffside. He drops two men from his plane by parachute before crashing, and Doc Daneeka is not among them. For this reason, Doc Daneeka is believed to have been killed in the crash because he had his name put on the flight roster in order to meet the minimum for flight time.
