[edit] why?
Why did you convert my 154kB Chicago skyline picture to a 1.54MB one? Isn't that a big waste of space?

[edit] Image:GaryBecker.gif
I have marked Image:GaryBecker.gif as having possibly incorrect licensing information until we can get justification that the copyright holder has indeed released all rights to it. Please discuss this issue on the image's talk page. —Bkell (talk) 04:27, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
- I have listed this image as a copyright violation. We cannot simply take images from Web pages, upload them to Wikipedia, and claim that the copyright holder has irrevocably released all rights. If we are going to use copyrighted images, we must license them from the copyright holder under a free license, such as the GFDL. Even a statement from the copyright holder that grants permission to use the image on Wikipedia is not enough, because the goal of Wikipedia is to become a free encyclopedia that anyone can use for any purpose. This means that all images on Wikipedia must be OK to put on other Web pages, print on T-shirts, sell as postcards, use in political campaigns, and so on. If we do not have such permission from the copyright holder, we cannot use the image on Wikipedia. Let me know if you have any questions. —Bkell (talk) 04:55, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] License tagging for Image:Mountrushmorephoto.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Mountrushmorephoto.jpg. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:

[edit] Regarding Image:Mountrushmorephoto.jpg
You might want to ask the photographer to email his express permission to release the image under the GFDL to the Wikimedia foundation (permission@wikimedia.org) so the image can be properly tagged with ConfirmationImageOTRS by a wikimedia clerk. As is, the image risk deletion because it lacks a proper Image copyright tags. Regards. Circeus 04:06, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Alumni list
I'm disappointed that you've expanded the alumni list within the University of Chicago article without stating any rule for deciding who is sufficiently important to get their names into the main article.
We'll see whether or not that proves to be a problem.
I expect that what will happen is that someone will waltz in, turn the paragraph into a bullet list (expanding its size manyfold) and other people will add to that bullet list willy-nilly, probably without bothering to provide references, until it dwarfs other sections of the article and contains at least a couple of prank entries.
I'll be happy if I'm proved wrong on this. Dpbsmith (talk) 20:26, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Page Changes
Firstly, I apologize for reverting such a large chunk of work. However, I firmly believe that one of the strengths of the UChicago page (as opposed to many other university pages on Wikipedia) is its clean layout. Large photos and concise paragraphs keep readers from being bombarded by text and information, facts and statistics. I think listing out majors and minors is a good idea, as is putting Schools and Divisions into a template. However, moving the photos around and adding photos here and there and making them smaller just made the page look too cluttered. That was the only reason for the revert -- nothing personal. 67.64.185.237 03:34, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Signatures
I copied this directly from another edit I made so some material may seem odd at points
OK.. I'll try to explain as best I can.
First you will need to go to "my preferences" on the first tab is a section called signature. You post what you want your signature to be here. Make sure to check the box labeled "Raw signature (no auto link; don't use templates or external links in this)"
for different colors: <font color="PUT YOUR COLOR HERE BETWEEN THE QUOTES">TEXT THAT YOU WISH TO BE COLORED</font> color names are limited, if you know hex code this works too. for different pages: wikimarkup works here For example: Shannon would display "Shannon" but it would link to your talk page. Shannon would display "Shannon" but would link to your page.
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask on my talk page. --WillMak050389 02:04, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
- Hi, i see that you have already got the answer to your question, anyway rhis is the code for my sig, remember to tick "Raw signature" in your preference
- <font color="red">Plane</font><font color="blue">Mad</font>|YakYak PlaneMad|YakYak 07:39, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Re:Signature
- To add a link to your discussion page, just add (whatever you want to go here).
- To change the colour, type <font color="(the color, for example green is 00CD00)"> and </font color> around the words you want coloured.
- If you see a signature that you like on a talk page, then copy the signature (by going to the edit page) and just change it to your username. Make sure that the "Raw signature" box is checked.
For example, my signature is "<font color="00CD00">Thelb</font><font color="FF8247">4</font>" which changes to Thelb4
If you need any more help, just tell me. --Thelb4 07:59, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry for the late reply. Looks like you managed to get a colourful signature from helpful editors. :) =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:59, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Northwestern U
If you'd rather that people didn't make "ridiculous assumptions" regarding why you edited the Northwestern page, perhaps you should explain your edits. 24.2.244.245 02:42, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
-
- Furthermore, why did you edit your own talk page?
- I understand your position now; however, one notes strong favoritism throughout the University of Chicago article, (e.g. the introduction's second paragraph, specifically the first line of it,) stronger than any inherent in the word "leading." After all, Northwestern truly "leads" in academic fields such as: journalism, econ, business, film/theatre, art history, engneering, etc. I assume that you know this--an intelligent, fellow Chicagoan. Certainly, no more boosterism in Northwestern "leading" than in UChicago's "world's foremost universities." 24.2.244.245 17:30, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
- Furthermore, why did you edit your own talk page?
[edit] Chicago
Hi there. I've been in love with the University for the last two years or so, and against all odds, I'll be coming there in a week or so as a 3rd year in the College, transfer student. What year are you? --Neverborn 06:10, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Image:RobertLucas.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:RobertLucas.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add Replaceable fair use disputed
- On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Chowbok ☠ 23:22, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Image:BECKER 1.jpg
I've nominated Image:BECKER 1.jpg (which you uploaded) for deletion as I uploaded a free replacement (Image:Becker.jpg), so it no longer qulaifies as fair use. Please see Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion/2006 November 16. AdamSmithee 12:08, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:Depaulblue.gif)
Thanks for uploading Image:Depaulblue.gif. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BigDT 23:31, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
