McLean v. Arkansas
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
McLean v. Arkansas was a 1981 legal case in Arkansas which ruled that the Arkansas "Balanced Treatment for Creation-Science and Evolution-Science Act" was unconstitutional because it violated the establishment clause of the U.S. Constitution. The judge, William Overton, handed down his decision on January 5, 1982.
The legislation was opposed by many groups including religious organizations. The plaintiffs were led by the Methodist minister William McLean. Creationists did not appeal the decision and it was not until the 1987 case of Edwards v. Aguillard that teaching "creation science" was ruled unconstitutional.
Although much of the transcript of the case was lost, including evidence from Francisco Ayala, the McLean v Arkansas Documentation Project seeks to preserve and disseminate copies of surviving transcripts.
