McHenry Boatwright (1920 or 1928 - 1994) was a baritone who appeared in opera and concerts. Boatwright performed with the New York Philharmonic, the National Negro Opera Foundation and he was a voice teacher at Ohio State University. For many years he produced the Sacred Concerts performed by the Duke Ellington Orchestra in London and New York. He was married to Ruth Ellington, the younger sister of Duke Ellington.

McHenry Boatwright 's life most probably inspired Richard Powers' The Time of Our Singing. His central character Jonah Strom seems to be partly inspired by this gifted singer.[citation needed]

In 1966, Time magazine wrote , "The Visitation, an opera based loosely on Franz Kafka's The Trial, is U.S. Composer Gunther Schuller's way of dealing "with the Kafkaesque in the Negro problem."[citation needed] The central character is Carter Jones, splendidly sung by Negro Baritone McHenry Boatwright.
