McFarlane Sports Picks

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

McFarlane Sports Picks is the name given to the line of sports-related action figures released by McFarlane Toys, a company founded by Spawn creator Todd McFarlane. The figures feature lifelike renderings of select stars in the five most popular sports in North America - baseball, football, hockey, basketball and stock car racing. The company has official licensing rights to the major professional leagues of all of these sports.

[edit] Beginnings

An avid sports fan, collector of sports memorabilia and part-owner of a professional hockey team (the Edmonton Oilers), Todd McFarlane created McFarlane Sports Picks in 2001 with the release of a series of NHL hockey players. The figures were licensed by the NHLPA but not by the league itself; as such, the players' jerseys featured the colours of the teams for which they played, but the NHLPA logo in place of the team logos (which the NHL holds rights to).

The figures proved to be popular enough with fans and collectors that the NHL - and later the NFL - signed a licensing agreement with McFarlane, allowing future releases to be branded with league and team logos.

Later in 2001, McFarlane Sports Picks released Series 1 of their NHL line, and Series 1 & 2 of their NFL line.

  • Paul Kariya (2), Nashville Predators

  • Alexander Ovechkin, Washington Capitals

[edit] Chase figures

To increase the figures' appeal among collectors, McFarlane Toys issues rare alternately-painted versions of most figures, officially called Chases. Differences between the standard figure and the chase figure usually (but do not always) involve a change in the player's jersey color (usually a change from home to away or vice versa, or a 'retro' chase depicting a player in the colours of a team he formerly played for). Common figure versions are pictured on the back of the figure's packaging, while chase are not. This excludes the NHL series 2, Joe Thornton, Dominik Hasek and NFL 6's Rich Gannon.

Chase are shipped randomly in factory cases. Buyers looking to purchase specific chases (without having to sift through all of the figures on primary retail store shelves) can usually find them in select hobby stores, on eBay or at collectors' websites. Depending on the figure and the rarity of the chase (ie, the number of units produced), some can fetch up to ten times the retail price of the common figure.

The list below is incomplete but designed to merely list some chase figures which differ from the common figures in ways other than a simple change in jersey colour.

[edit] NASCAR Chases

Chases of Action McFarlane (NASCAR) figures, known as Specialty figures, include a winner's circle-style base and backdrop. These are also unique in that the mass-market figures had alcohol and tobacco advertising removed, while chase figures were authentic and are only sold through McFarlane Toys' website, Spawn.com, or through collectors' stores. They are not sold to buyers under 18 years of age.
