[edit] Class Action Lawsuit
On April 25, 2006, several residents of McCullom Lake filed a class-action lawsuit against five manufacturing companies in the area, claiming that the companies illegally dumped chemicals in the local groundwater for over fifty years while willfully covering up the severity and frequency of such instances. The lawsuit was filed by a Philadelphia attorney on behalf of a group next-door neighbors who all contracted a rare form of brain cancer, two of whom have died. On May 23, 2006, officials from the McHenry County Health Department testified that the number of cancers in the area was not above average. Only a few days later, on May 26, three more lawsuits were filed in a Philadelphia court, bringing the number of plaintiff families in the case to six. Some local residents have criticized the McHenry County Health Department, charging that it has not taken a more active role in the investigation, citing the agency's failure to issue an official statement regarding the lawsuits for over a month after they were filed.
The companies named in the suit, including Rohm and Haas, one of the largest chemical companies in the United States who only recently moved to the area, have denied responsibility for the cancer cases and say they will fight the suit in court. The plants in question in the lawsuits are located in the adjacent community of Ringwood, Illinois.
The story has been covered in depth by the local newspaper, the Northwest Herald, published in nearby Crystal Lake, Illinois. Although an important story locally, the story has received only passing coverage in other media, such as the major newspapers of Chicago.
