[edit] Summary

The group was created in 1989 when Terry Brown, executive vice president of MCA Nashville, introduced songwriter Terry McBride to two session players, Billy Thomas and Ray Herndon. All three seemed to click right away; in addition, they harmonized well. Throughout the early 1990s, the group landed several chart singles, including four consecutive Top 5 hits. Although McBride & The Ride never topped the Billboard country charts, "Sacred Ground" did reach #1 on Radio & Records' country singles chart.

In early 1994, Ray Herndon and Billy Thomas left the group, and were replaced by Keith Edwards, Kenny Vaughn, and Randy Frazier. It was at this point that the group was re-named "Terry McBride & The Ride"; they released one album under that name before disbanding. Ray Herndon later found some success as a songwriter; among other songs, he wrote "She's Got It All", which was a #1 hit for Kenny Chesney in 1997. (Herndon co-wrote the song with Drew Womack, then lead singer of Sons of the Desert).

By 2000, the group re-united after a show, when lead singer Terry McBride suggested that they go back to the studio. They then recorded some demos and shopped around, eventually landing a deal with Dualtone Records in 2002. The album "Amarillo Sky" reverted the group's name to "McBride & The Ride".

Although the 2002 album produced only one single, the song "Amarillo Sky" is notable in that it was co-written by Kenny Alphin and John Rich, who would later become famous as Big & Rich. Also, the song was later recorded by Jason Aldean; his version was a Top 5 country hit in late 2006/early 2007.

[edit] Other notes

  • The single "No More Cryin'" was featured in the movie 8 Seconds.
  • McBride & The Ride's biggest hit, "Sacred Ground", was co-written by Kix Brooks of Brooks & Dunn. Kix originally recorded the song himself on a solo album before the formation of Brooks & Dunn.
  • Conversely, many of Brooks & Dunn's hits have been co-written by Terry McBride, including "Play Something Country", "I Am That Man", and "He's Got You", as well as "If You See Him/If You See Her", which featured Brooks & Dunn and Reba McEntire.
  • In early 2006, Ray Herndon released a duet with Clint Black called "Grain of Salt".
