Mbita Point

Mbita Point is a rural community in the province of Nyanza, Kenya, on the shores of Lake Victoria. It is home to Mbita Point Research and Training Centre. An International School (primary) and a Hospital is hosted by the Centre. Mbita has several other primary schools as well as secondary schools. A small Sub-District hospital is also located within the town. The main District hospital is in the neighbouring town of Sindo, about 15 km away. Mbita has both water and electricity supply(since 2005). Mbita Point has an urban population of 6100, but the population grows rapidly due to urbanization, new technologies like cell phone coverage and internet connection through cyber cafe's, electrification, trade and education. [1]. The town is capital of the Suba District.
Mbita can be reach by road Kisumu-Ahero-Katiti-Kendu Bay-Homa Bay (150 km) or from Kisumu-Luanda Kotieno (90 km) + a 45 mins. ferry ride across Winam Gulf. This latter road will be tarmacked before the end of 2007. The main income generating activity in Mbita is presently fishing, but tourism is becoming a new trade as the road connections to the rest of the country is being improved.
