- * {{IPvandal|206.108.165.249}} - Look at Contribs page of this user, especially the edits to the Natural resource article. Almost every one of the contributions (if not all) is vandalism. Look at his/her Talk page and he/she has been repeatedly admonished for vandalism. In my opinion, a very lengthy block of that user is warranted.

[edit] Citation Templates
The empty template to use is: {{cite book|author=|title=|edition=|publisher=|year=|id=}}
Instead of an author's LastName, FirstName, you can enter an editor's LastName, FirstName followed by (Editor). In either case, the FirstName can be followed by a MiddleInitial.
- For books:
{{cite book|author=Beychok, Milton R.|title=Fundamentals Of Stack Gas Dispersion|edition=4th Edition|publisher=author-published|year=2005|id=ISBN 0964458802}}
produces this:
Beychok, Milton R. (2005). Fundamentals Of Stack Gas Dispersion, 4th Edition, author-published. ISBN 0964458802.
- For conference proceedings:
{{cite book|author=Editors: Kretzschmar, J. G. and Cosemans, G.|title=Harmonization within atmospheric dispersion modelling for regulatory purposes (4th Workshop)|edition=|publisher=International Journal of Environment and Pollution, vol 8 no 3-6, Interscience Enterprises, 1997|year=1996|id=ISSN 0957-4352}}
produces this:
Editors: Kretzschmar, J. G. and Cosemans, G. (1996). Harmonization within atmospheric dispersion modelling for regulatory purposes (4th Workshop). International Journal of Environment and Pollution, vol 8 no 3-6, Interscience Enterprises, 1997. ISSN 0957-4352.
- Journal articles
The empty template to use is:
{{cite journal|author=|date=|title=|journal=|volume=|issue=|pages=|doi=|id=|url=|format=|accessdate=}}
The only required field is the title. All of the others may be left blank or not even included in the template. For example:
{{cite journal|author=Beychok, M.R.|date=May 1951|title=Algebraic Solution of McCabe-Thiele Diagram|journal=Chemical Engineering Progress|volume=|issue=|pages=|id=}}
produces this:
Beychok, M.R. (May 1951). "Algebraic Solution of McCabe-Thiele Diagram". Chemical Engineering Progress.
[edit] Instructions on how to use a Discussion page
Placing this: {{HowtoTalk}} on a Discussion page will add this:
The first responder to someone's new comment should enter the response just beneath the new comment (instead of using the above + tab) and indent the response by starting with a colon like this :. Any second responder, indent further by starting with two colons like this :: and any third responder, start with three colons like this ::: and so forth. If we don't follow these practices, the result is jumbled mess.
[edit] Template for an unsigned Discussion comment
Use the History page to find the IP and date of the unsigned comment. For example, the IP found was 24.63.106.230 and the date was June 25, 2006 (UTC). The using this:
<small>{{unsigned|24.63.106.230|25 June 2006 (UTC)}}</small>
produces this:
—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.63.106.230 (talk • contribs) 25 June 2006 (UTC).
The time of the day, could also be included with the date if desired.
[edit] References and Reference Lists using the Cite.php method
(See Help:Footnotes)
[edit] Multiple insertion of the same reference
On the Edit page, this is placed at the first insertion point of citation:
- <ref name=Perry>Perry's Handbook, Sixth Edition, McGraw-Hill Co., 1984.</ref>
This is placed at the second insertion point of citation:
- <ref name=Perry/>
This is placed at the third insertion point of citation:
- <ref name=Perry/> ..... and so forth for further insertion points
[edit] Single insertion of a reference
For the single insertion of a reference, the "name" parameter is not needed. On the Edit page, this is placed at the insertion point of citation:
- <ref>Excel For Dummies, First Edition, Hungry Minds, Inc., 1980.</ref>
[edit] What is produced at the points of insertion
These are what is produced and note that the reference numbers in blue are automatically generated. Clicking on any one of the reference numbers causes the screen display to scroll down to that reference number in the Reference List section:
- First [1] text word referenced to Perry's Handbook
- Second [1] text word referenced to Perry's Handbook
- Third [1] text word referenced to Perry's Handbook
- The only [2] text word referenced to the Excel book.
[edit] Producing the reference or footnote list
On the Edit page, this is placed in the References or the Footnotes section:
-
- <references/>
- <references/>
This is what it produces and note that the list numbers are automatically generated:
- ^ a b c Perry's Handbook, Sixth Edition, McGraw-Hill Co., 1984.
- ^ Excel For Dummies, First Edition, Hungry Minds, Inc., 1980.
[edit] Notes on the Cite.php method
- Clicking on the blue superscript a causes the screen display to scroll back up to the point where the first reference to Perry's Handbook was inserted. Clicking on the blue superscript b causes the screen display to scroll back up to the point where the the second reference to Perry's Handbook was inserted. Clicking on the blue superscript c causes the screen display to scroll back up to the point where the the third reference to Perry's Handbook was inserted ... and so forth.
- Clicking on any caret (^) that has no associated superscripts cause the screen display to scroll back up to the point where that single-use references was inserted.
- Decreasing the size of the font used in the Reference or Footnote section lists to smaller than 90% of the regular size will drastically change the appearance of the reference listings. For one thing, the arrows will change to daggers (†). At least that is what happens using my Internet Explorer browser.
- I don't like the faint, spindly, hard-to-see arrows for the single-use references. I think they should be just as bold and well defined as the arrows for the multiple-use references. And I don't like writing the actual citation details at the point of citation ... it clutters up the Edit page quite badly.
[edit] Typical use of Div Tags
<center><div style="align:center; width:470px; padding:1em; border:solid 2px black; background-color:#cedff2;"> This section on the history of '''industrial flue gas stacks''' needs to be developed. If you have any knowledge of this subject, please contribute whatever you can. </div></center>
produces this:
This section on the history of industrial flue gas stacks needs to be developed. If you have any knowledge of this subject, please contribute whatever you can.
[edit] Table Template for lining up = signs
This is a template for a table that lines up = signs in a series of one line equations:
where: | |
= | |
= | |
= | |
= | |
= |
[edit] Image Syntax
[[Image:name.png|thumb|XXX px|right, left or center|caption]]
Image:Name.png must be the first parameter and it is the only required one. The other parameters may be in any order. Do not capitalize thumb, px, right or caption.
[edit] Wikitables
-
-
- See also:User:Dcljr/Tables ... it is very good!
-
- The use of ! instead of |, at the start of a cell, automatically produces a cell with text which is centered and bold.
with ! | with | |
---|
- If the table starts with {| Class=wikitable, that automatically produces a table with a very light grayish background and with collapsed borders (i.e., single-line borders). And if a wikitable cell starts with a ! instead of a |, that automatically produces a cell with a more grayish background and with text which is centered and bold.
with ! | with | |
---|
- In a wikitable, the text in a cell that does not start with a ! can be centered by starting the cell with align=center followed by a pipe, thus: align=center |... or by starting with two or more parameters followed by a pipe, thus: align=center width=20% |
with ! | with | |
---|
- In a wikitable, style specifications, which apply to all of the table cells, may be used. For example, {| Class=wikitable style="font-style:italic; font-size:130%; border:3px" produces this:
with ! | with | |
---|
[edit] Non-Wikitable using the "bg color" parameter to color a single row
Note that background color parameter (bgcolor=#xxxxxx) is placed after the row to be colored and before the next row:
Chimney | Year | Country | Town | Pinnacle height | Remarks | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
GRES-2 Power Station | 1987 | Kazachstan | Ekibastusz | 420 m | 1378 ft | Tallest chimney |
Inco Superstack | 1971 | Canada | Copper Cliff | 385 m | 1263 ft | Tallest freestanding chimney |
Anaconda Smelter Stack | 1919 | USA | Anaconda, Montana |
178 m | 585 ft | Tallest freestanding brick chimney |
and the color of the table border may be completely different if you wish:
Chimney | Year | Country | Town | Pinnacle height | Remarks | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
GRES-2 Power Station | 1987 | Kazachstan | Ekibastusz | 420 m | 1378 ft | Tallest chimney |
Inco Superstack | 1971 | Canada | Copper Cliff | 385 m | 1263 ft | Tallest freestanding chimney |
Anaconda Smelter Stack | 1919 | USA | Anaconda, Montana |
178 m | 585 ft | Tallest freestanding brick chimney |
[edit] Uploading a new version of an existing image
- Goto to the image in question.
- Click on the link that says "Upload a new version of this file".
- Select source and destination file names.
- Leave the Summary field blank.
- Leave the Licensing field set to "none" and click on Upload.
- If you chose a destination name that was the same as the original file name, click on upload anyway. Otherwise, you can ignore this step.
- The new version is uploaded. Visit the new image page and notice that the original copyright tag is still in place (which is fine, since that is the appropriate license). Also notice that a link to the previous version of the image still shows up in the history, so it can be reverted to the original version if needed.
- Edit the Summary on the Image's new version page and add a note saying that the latest revision was edited by user x on date x using program x for cropping.
[edit] TeX Fonts
This is an equation created with Wikipedia's font for math markup:
This is the same equation created using WikiCities' font for the very same math markup:
A suggestion has been made at Bugzilla that Wikipedia make the smaller font TeX version, used at WikiCities, available as an alternative option to the current larger TeX font used in Wikipedia. It is quite obvious that the WikCities TeX font is smaller, neater and tidier. It is much closer to the size of the regular text so that the overall look of an article that uses TeX equations is more balanced. Also, the smaller TeX font allows for displaying longer equations, within the display screen width, than does the Wikipedia font.
The larger font would remain just as it is. Users would still use the <math> and </math> tags. If they wanted to use the smaller font, they would use <maths> and </maths> or some similar technique. In other words, when a user creates an equation, he or she would decide which font they wanted to use.
If you agree with this suggestion, visit Bugzilla Bug #4915 at here, scroll down and vote for the proposal. - mbeychok 19:30, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:Manual of Style
This Manual of Style has the simple purpose of making the encyclopedia easy to read by following a consistent format — it is a style guide. The following rules do not claim to be the last word on Wikipedia style. One way is often as good as any other, but if everyone does it the same way, Wikipedia will be easier to read and use, not to mention easier to write and edit. In this regard, the following quotation from The Chicago Manual of Style deserves notice:
- Rules and regulations such as these, in the nature of the case, cannot be endowed with the fixity of rock-ribbed law. They are meant for the average case, and must be applied with a certain degree of elasticity.
In this vein, editors of new and existing articles should strive to have their articles follow these guidelines.
Clear, informative, and unbiased writing is always more important than presentation and formatting. Wikipedia does not require writers to follow all or any of these rules, but their efforts will be more appreciated when they do so: the joy of wiki editing is that Wikipedia does not require perfection.
[The bolding in the above has been added by User:Mbeychok for emphasis.]
