Mbarara is the home of Mbarara University of Science & Technology, founded in 1989. There were many educational institutions well before then, including Bishop Stewart Teacher Training College, Maryhill High School for Girls, and for boys Mbarara High School and Ntare School. At independence these were state boarding schools whose pupils went on to make major contributions to Uganda today, including President Museveni (Ntare), The Hon. Sam Kuteesa, Minister of Foreign Affairs (MHS) and the academic Dr. Sam Nahamya (MHS).
