Mayu Amakura

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mayu Amakura (天倉 繭 Amakura Mayu?) is a protagonist from the video game Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly and the older identical twin sister of Mio Amakura, who is the main protagonist of the game. Mayu has a very strong sixth sense which allows her to feel the presence of the supernatural. She has a permanent limp due to a fall when she was a young child. As she is more in-tune with the supernatural than Mio she is often used as a medium and cannot fight off ghosts on her own.

[edit] Fate

Mayu's ultimate fate varies in the different endings of the game.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

In the bad ending, Sae Kurosawa, still in possession of Mayu, sends Mio, who has lost the will to keep their promise, back to the forest alone.

In the canonical ending, Mio regretfully strangles Mayu in the ritual, becoming the game's sole survivor. Months later, as she visits the completed Minakami Dam, Mio, now a Remaining, bares the mark of the butterfly on her throat. However, her hair has yet to start turning white (a side effect of that person being a Remaining).

In the Hard/PS2 Nightmare/Xbox Fatal level ending, Mio, having successfully defeated Sae, manages to catch Mayu as Sae falls into the abyss. Itsuki tells Mio not to look into the abyss, but Mio disobeys him and goes blind as a result. Months later, as the twins visit the completed Minakami Dam, Mayu cracks a smile as they head home, as Mio now has to rely on her for guidance.

In the Xbox Nightmare ending, Sae, still in possession of Mayu, is reunited with Yae's spirit, which separates from Mio, and the Kurosawa twins fall into the abyss together, releasing all of the butterflies. Just as the Kurosawas are about to go over, Mio successfully pulls Mayu from Sae, and as the Amakuras watch the butterflies in the sunrise, Mio promises Mayu that, even though they might not ever be able to become one, like the Kurosawas did in the abyss, she will never leave her side again.

The Fatal Frame fansite Beyond The Camera's Lens gives an explanation as to how Yae's spirit can be in two places at once, as this Yae apparently is part of the spirit of Yae Munakata from the original game.

Spoilers end here.
