Mayiladuthurai (formerly Mayuram or Mayavaram) is a city and a municipality in Nagapattinam district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The town is located in the historic Thanjavur area on the banks of river Cauvery. Mayiladuthurai is a well known railway junction and the town is well-connected with other major towns in the region, such as Tiruchirappalli and Kumbakonam. Mayiladuthurai is a Lok Sabha constituency [1] represented by Mani Shankar Aiyar.

[edit] Name and significance

Legends say that due to a curse, Goddess Parvathi took birth as peacock in Mayuram and worshiped Lord Shiva in his form of Mayuranathar. Mayuram means peacock in Sanskrit and it was later translated as Mayiladuthurai in Tamil language. According to the book Mayiladuthurai Mahaangal (Saints of Mayiladuthurai), several saints lived and attained their final peace (samadhi) in and around Mayiladuthurai. Lot of siddhars also have lived here. Even today there is a village called Sidharkaadu in the western outskirts of Mayiladuthurai. Legends also tell that it was a part of Tharukavanam.

The central town has the majority of business establishments. Residential areas are mostly in the two suburbs called Korainaadu (Koranad) and Thiru-Indaloor (Thirivizhandur).

Mayiladuthurai is famous of its Gold Jewelry business and its Marriage-Halls. Nearly a hundred marriage-halls are there in the town and people from various places come here to conduct marriage ceremonies because of Mayiladuthurai's best-in-class (cheap & readily-available) people and services for marriage ceremonies.

In the last couple of years, the Mayiladuturai-Tiruchi train has expanded economic activity in the region [2].

As of 2001 India censusGRIndia, Mayiladuthurai had a population of 84,290. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Mayiladuthurai has an average literacy rate of 80%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 84%, and female literacy is 76%. In Mayiladuthurai, 9% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The Mayooranathar Temple, also called the 'big temple' is a temple dedicated to Shiva where Thevaram is recited.

Vallalar Temple in the northern bank of river Cauvery is a famous Shiva temple known for its Guru shrine.

Ayyarapper Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva is located at the center of the city. Thola Festival is famous in this temple and it is celebrated in the month of October.

Parimala Ranganathar temple, the Vishnu temple in Thiru-Indalur suburb is one among the 108 Thivya Desams.

Navagraha temples are situated around this town. There are many famous temples in Mayiladuthurai's vicinity, most important amongst which is the Vaitheeswaran Temple at Vaitheeswarankoil. The temple complex is known to house many astrologers employing a method of fortune telling called Nadi Jyothidam. The town also has a Medhaa Dakshinamurthi temple. Other temples of importance include the Sukran Temple and a temple dedicated to Goddess Abirami.

One of the institutions that was formed for the flourishing of Saivam and Tamil, Dharmapuram Adhinam (Mutt) is in the eastern part of Mayuram.

Notable contriubutors to to Tamil literature and culture like Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai, U. V. Swaminathan Iyer, Mayuram Vedanayakam Pillai and Kalki Krishnamurthy lived in Mayuram. Musicians Madurai Mani Iyer, Mayuram Rajam Iyer, and Mayuram Govindaraja Pillai were citizens of Mayuram.

Other notable personalities from Mayiladuthurai include Kundrakudi Adigalar, M. S. Udayamoorthy Gopalakrishna Bharathiyar T.RAJENDER and Mayuram Balamurugan Pillai(Punch Bala).

Some contemporary literary figures are: Sa. Kandasamy, N.Muthusamy. ARC Jewels, Kaaliyakudi Coffee and Thevar Paathirakadai were famous landmarks of Mayiladuthurai. Politically it was a stronghold of Congress first and DMK later. Here yearly Sri Ragavendra Aradhana is famous. During Aradhana, the Annadanam will be distributed throughout the day for poor and needy people. The Aradhana is conducting by Vijithrayar street people.
