[edit] Marathi Language Dwindling Nos

  • "considering the dwindling number of students opting for Marathi-medium schools."
    • I belive "increase in preference for english medium schools" would be a better sentence. Because although in middle class preference for English medium schools is increasing ,it will not affect in absolute percentage terms because of most of rural and poor population is much dependant on Govt. run Marathi Medium schools only;and their population is ever increasing

[edit] Fighting for nothing!

Hey thanks for that wikistress link! I had got this revelation long back when i read some articles about wikipedia on web including those which criticise it. Unfortunately few editors take it too personally and seriously and i really pity on them (and this aint sarcasm!).As u can see on belgaum page I was ready to remove the citation if no one's contesting my edit but these guys were blabbering and fighting for no reason!! [edit] Unspecified source for Image:Melissa Theuriau.JPG

Thanks for uploading Image:Melissa Theuriau.JPG. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Yamla 15:40, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Melissa Theuriau.JPG

Warning sign This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Melissa Theuriau.JPG. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. When you use a generic fair use tag such as {{fair use}} or {{fair use in|article name}}, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Yamla 15:40, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Melissa Theuriau.JPG

Thanks for uploading Image:Melissa Theuriau.JPG. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Yamla 15:40, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] IPM Page - Thanks for your inputs!

Hi Max, actually, I agree with you that I shoudl use the word 'claim'. I will. :) With regard to the controversy section, I was simply following precedent, in that a lot of institutions and companies on WIkipedia have Criticism as their topics on similar issues. I aree with the usage issue, and would be happy to consider a third alternative. You see controversy as a word has an interesting nuance, that may not accurately describe the content of the section. With reference to the section being well-researched, It lists a number of issues against the institute. I have described why that section should be rewritten on Talk:The_Indian_Institute_of_Planning_and_Management#Controversies - comprehensive re-write. Currently, that section constitutes an attack on the institute, and cites blogs and a magazine that does not qualify as a vverifiable source.I have mentioned the issues with the sources here [of JAMMAG quotes]. Do let me know your opinion, ad perhaps you could help me with a rewrite after you have reviewed this material? Many thanks, --Iipmstudent9 13:03, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Sunita Williams

Perhaps u didnt eye on the menu This article is in Wikiproject India. May i know from you why it is belongs to Indian Project. Is there any one who give me the reason. i am waiting for the answer. After 24 hours i will upload the Hindi name. Guddu 07:05, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Query regarding names in other languages

Hello Bhadani,

I have been having a discussion with a fellow editor over here and we seem to disagree about whether or not to put Sunita Williams' name in Hindi on her page. I have been arguing against putting her Hindi name, because Williams is a citizen-by-birth of the USA (please see the aforementioned talk page for more details). Her Indian link is through her father who was an Indian immigrant. Just for the sake of uniformity and for future reference, I would like to know if it is appropriate to include names in the native tongue of people who are the second (or generally, nth) generation offprings of immigrants.

I would appreciate your opinion on this. Is there any WP rule/guideline that can throw more light on the issue? I read this and this, but couldn't find a lot of relevant information.

Thanks, Max 11:56, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Ancient Lands

Well, what is problematic is using an expression like "ancient Pakistan," which indeed would imply that Pakistan has been around since ancient times. However, since Pakistan is a modern-day state, the expression "ancient lands of Pakistan" is equivalent to "ancient lands of modern-day Pakistan." So using the latter expression makes one redundancy. Saying "ancient lands of what is now modern-day Pakistan" is the double redundancy, since you clearly don't need "what is now" when you say "modern-day." Fowler&fowler«Talk» 08:46, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

I have changed it to "ancient lands of modern-day Pakistan." Thanks for your feedback. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 10:44, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Message from Maharashtraexpress

Sir, this is true. Konkanis in Maharashtra have always considered themselves as Maharashtrians. will u plz add back the stuff? Plus, Konkani isnot the sole official language,Marathi is also one of the official language of Goa.Maharashtraexpress 05:19, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Konkani Language Article

I have placed a rewrite-section tag on the Konkani v/s Marathi section. Kindly view my comments in the discussion page and add your opinion.

PS: we seem to think alike. I have been working on a longer and more detailed article for the Konkani page where I intended to put a section on Konkani Revival and Shenoi Goembab. I also intended to put detaield information abotu SN Katre's (and other's) work , and detaisl about the various scrit debates. Can I be sure you are not reading my mind or something???

OK just joking.

I will put up more contents in a couple of days. Maybe a separate history of Konkani page too. Will let you know and look forward to your feedback. --Deepak D'Souza 10:04, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

Sure. I would request u to verify the official language status once again. No hard feelings from my end. :) Maharashtraexpress 05:07, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

I have placed a draft of the improved Konkani article on my userpage. I have not yet seperated the History section. It needs more work , such as adding links and refs ,also I have to carry over the changes done by others. I have yet to work out the Konkani v/s Marathi section. But I feel it would be better if you do it yourself. Just dont spend too many lines on it. All I request is that in the quest for neutrality, facts should not be sidelined.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Deepak_D%27Souza/Konkani

Your suggestions /criticism will be appreciated

--Deepak D'Souza 12:35, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your feedback. You are right about the problems section. Most of it is my own observations, and I agree it may be difficult to find citations for all of them. Since you are busy I will do the Marathi Konkani section myself, problem being it may be really difficult for me to maintain NPOV . --Deepak D'Souza 04:35, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Thank you very much.It has taken a week of stolen office time to do the work. Hope more people will contribute more info.

I am not very happy about the "It has been claimed by some quarters that..." Because some quarters is too neutral, too ambiguous. Nontheless, I wont bother to change it. You can't make everyone happy everytime, can you!

Apart from that I appreciate the changes you have made.--Deepak D'Souza 04:46, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Regarding IIPM

Hi Max,

Nowadays I don't have much time to look into the IIPM article, and what I am observing is that the page is fast becoming a battleground between two groups of editors both of whom are trying to insert their POV into the article. I have seen your contributions to be very constructive, so it is my request that you please try to dedicate more time to the article and bring it out of the shabby state. Regards, — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 16:50, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the positive reply. Wikipedia is, and should remain politically correct. In my opinion the Mumbai train bombings was a terrorist attack, but i also think what America is doing in Afghanistan and Iraq is terrorism. Others, especially for the latter, will disagree, so it best to remain neutral and just avoid the term. IP198 21:25, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
