Maximum Power Point Tracking

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maximum power point tracking is the process of optimizing the power output of a solar panel.

A solar charge controller looks at the output of the panels, and compares it to the battery voltage. It then figures out what is the absolute best power that the panel can put out. It takes this and converts it to the best voltage to get maximum current into the battery. Most MPPT's are around 92-97% efficient in the conversion. You typically get a 20 to 45% power gain in winter and 10-20% in summer.
