Maximilian Njegovan

Maximilian Njegovan (October 31, 1858 Zagreb - July 1, 1930 Zagreb) was a Croatian general in the Austro-Hungarian army. After graduating from KuK Naval Academy in Rijeka he started his maritime career in Pula in 1877. Contreadmiral in 1911, Vice-admiral in 1913. He was named Commander in Chief of the Kriegsmarine and the fleet after the death of Grand Admiral Anton Haus in February of 1917. Later that year Emperor Wilhelm II of Germany and Kaiser Karl I of Austria proposed invasion of Venice with the whole fleet, but Njegovan decidedly objected to this idea. Some months later, after a Gulf of Kotor Mutiny,he was replaced by Linienschiffkapitaen Miklós Horthy, and retired in Pula. He is buried in Mirogoj cemetery.
