Maxima (マキシマ Makishima?) is a fictional character in The King of Fighters video game series.
[edit] History
Maxima was a Canadian soldier who led a normal life until he found out that his comrade-in-arms Rocky was killed in an incident involving NESTS. So he sought for revenge against NESTS. To avenge Rocky he decided to sacrifice his previous life, had his face and name changed and his "ordinary" life destroyed.
To infiltrate the cartel without being recognized he had his body cybernetically modified by Dr. Makishima, hence his codename of Maxima. As a cyborg, he has his strength and reaction increased to superhuman level, built-in weapons (hand cannon and (originally blocked) powerful cannon-like weapon installed in his chest) and the ability to conduct data analysis as well as some degree of cyberpathy (he's able to perform feats such as connection to the sattelite via cybernetic part of his mind according to Maxima's personal story in KOF MI2 and K' Team story in KOF'03). Those systems are powered by a miniaturized nuclear reactor (so called Maxima "Heart"). It's unclear whether his real heart remains as part of those 20% of his body which is still organic or it was replaced with its artificial analogue.
Maxima was K's fellow NESTS agent, and accompanied him on many missions including entering the KOF '99 tournament along with Benimaru Nikaido and Shingo Yabuki. When K' learned the truth of his existence and rebelled against NESTS, Maxima was happy to join him and helped him to escape from NESTS' underground base.
Thus, Maxima became K's steadfast companion and his best friend. His light-hearted nature makes him the perfect compliment to K', and in many ways, K' owes his life to him.
Before KOF2000, Vanessa contacted Maxima as she sought help from him and K' trying to defeat NESTS.
In his warpath of revenge, in 2001 Maxima discovered that Rocky wasn't absolutely killed and his brain was placed into a robot. But the "reunion" didin't last long as Igniz got rid of his "rebellious servant". As a last gift, Rocky activated his friend's Final Cannon (Maxima Beam) which eventually become his special attack.
In 2003, it was Maxima who convinced K' to listen to Chin Gentsai and to take part in the KOF tournament to discover the "evil presence".
[edit] Notes
- Maxima is a cyborg, which explains his weight (over 200 kg) and various forms of built-in, futuristic weaponry ("Vapour Cannon", "M2 Style Maxima Beam" and "MX II Style/MX-IIb Maxima Cannon").
- Maxima's alternate Striker in KOF 2000 is named Rocky, but it is not the Rocky of his past. It is in fact, a cyborg named Rocky from a previous SNK game called Robo Army (where a character named Maxima also appears but it's still unclear whether it is the same Maxima). In addition, one of his hidden costumes in KOF: MI2 looks like Rocky.
- His KOF '02 HSDM is called Archenemy, quite possibly be a reference to the metal band of the same name.
- Maxima may be the only fighting game character ever to fake a suplex while in the midst of performing it, he can do this in the Maximum Impact games.
- In Maximum Impact 2 Kula calls Maxima "uncle" although he dosen't like being called that.
- Maxima's Maxima Revenger (S)DM pays homage to Kinnikuman Super Phoenix's "Muscle Revenger" in the manga/anime fantasy wrestling series Kinnikuman.
