Max Medina is a fictional character on the television series Gilmore Girls, played by Scott Cohen.
[edit] Background
Max Medina was a regular Gilmore Girls character in Season 1, and made guest appearances in both Seasons 2 and 3. Max was Rory’s (Alexis Bledel) English teacher in her sophomore year at Chilton, a Prep School in Connecticut. He was, for a short time, Lorelai’s (Lauren Graham) fiancé, but she broke off the engagement soon before the wedding was to occur.
[edit] Max Throughout the Seasons
Max first met Lorelai at a parent teacher meeting. He assured Lorelai that Rory was a fine student and person. The next day, however, after studying all night, Rory is late to her test and Max does not let her take it. Lorelai has to come in and she furiously yells at Max for misleading her.
- Lorelai: [to Max] And you! You say she’s smart and she’ll be fine and this rotting stodgy rathole could use somebody like her and then you completely shut her out of a test that she’s crammed for, that she’s ready for, that she completely deserves to take!
- Max: I didn’t call this place a ‘rathole’
- Lorelai: Oh no that’s true. I added that. Wouldn’t want you to get in trouble with ‘Il duce’ here. I thought this place was going to be so great! And now I guess this goes on the ‘Boy was I wrong’ list, right above gauchos but just below the Flashdance phase.
- —Season 1, Ep.4 “The Deer Hunters”
However, Headmaster Charleston agrees to let her do extra credit to make up for the missed test.
Lorelai and Max encounter each other again at a bake sale, where Lorelai treats him very coldly.
- Max: Good to see you, Lorelai.
- Lorelai: Good to see you, Mr. Medina.
- Max: Max.
- Lorelai: Mr. Medina.
- Max:: Max.
- Lorelai:: Mr. Medina. Meet Sookie, the chef at the inn. Sookie, Mr. Medina.
- Sookie: What's your name again?
- Lorelai: Mr. Medina.
- Sookie:: I know, you’ve said it like a zillion times. (to Mr. Medina) Hello.
- —Season 1, Ep.5 “Cinnamon's Wake”
After some prodding, Mr. Medina gets Lorelai to agree to go on an unofficial date with him. Lorelai, however, remains worried on how their potential relationship will affect Rory. She does listen to her heart and agree, however, they have to cancel because Lorelai attends a wake for her neighbor Babette’s (Sally Struthers) cat, Cinnamon. The two get to go on a proper date when Max’s car breaks down in Stars Hollow, where Lorelai and Rory live. The two walk in the snow, go to the movies and have a nice evening. When they get back to Lorelai’s house, she hesitates on letting him in, on the grounds that she never lets men she dates in her house, because its sacred space for her and Rory. However, Mr. Medina tugs on her heartstrings with his beautiful words and he ends up spending the night on the couch, which makes Rory uncomfortable, but she values her mom’s happiness and lets it slide. The two go on more dates: to the movies and dinner, to Max’s apartment to make dinner, and Rory and Max slowly get used to each other’s presence outside of school. However, after Paris Gellar (Liza Weil), Rory’s enemy, sees Lorelai and Max kissing in school, Max breaks it off because he was jeopardizing his career by dating a parent. After a long period of separation, Lorelai realizes how much she misses him and goes back to him. The two have sex and try to figure out their future, since being apart did not work. They agree to talk on the phone on a regular basis. After hanging out with Lorelai and Rory, Max meets Luke (Scott Patterson), which is a very hostile encounter. Once Luke leaves, Lorelai and Max start fighting over who they dated while they were apart. Lorelai thinks they need to break up since they always fight when things start getting good again, but Max proposes instead, saying that is the only way they will make it work.
- Lorelai: No. A proposal had to be something more than the desperate desire to end a bickering match.
- Max: It was more than that.
- Lorelai: No, it has to be planned. It should be magical. There should be music playing and romantic lighting and a subtle buildup to the popping of the big question. There should be a thousand yellow daisies and candles and a horse and I don’t know what the horse is doing there unless you’re riding it, which seems a little over the top, but it should be more than this.
- —Season 1, Ep.21 “Love, Daisies and Troubadours”
In the Season 1 finale, when Lorelai goes to work, she finds 1,000 yellow daisies and gets a phone call from Max saying that he may have done it spontaneously, but he was serious, and he loved her.
In the Season 2 premiere, we see Lorelai and Rory talking of Lorelai’s wedding, and the town is covered in daisies. After telling the news to Luke, who asks all of the tough questions, Lorelai becomes panicked and calls Max wondering where they are going to live and whose bank they will use. When Lorelai tells her parents, Emily (Kelly Bishop) and Richard Gilmore (Edward Herrmann), they respond coldly, which hurts her greatly. She goes back to them with Max and tells them off, but mother and daughter make up soon after. After Lorelai and Max get in an argument over his role in Rory’s life and after hearing of her mother’s happiness before her own wedding night (which Lorelai could not relate to) Lorelai realizes Max is not “the one” and she calls the wedding off.
He reappears in Season 3, when he returns to Chilton. Lorelai is unsure if she still has feelings for him or not but he seems to be over it. He said he was convinced he was over her, but seeing her, he was unsure. Even though they kiss after a Chilton event, he says he thinks it would be best if they stay apart and never contact each other again. And that is the last time we see Max Medina.
