[edit] History

Achille Maramotti was born on January 7, 1927 in Reggio Emilia in Italy. At 20, Maramotti began designing couture clothing and officially established the Max Mara House in 1951. Originally the fashion house specialized in men's formal wear[1], however has since become a women's fashion house.

Today, Max Mara is one of the largest and most popular Italian fashion houses[2]. Max Mara has spawned nearly 20 labels under its name, however, Max Mara's luxury women wear remains the most profitable while its trendy, youth Max&Co. division is also gaining international popularity. In 2005, the Max Mara Fashion Group generated over $1 billion in revenues [3].

According to Forbes Rich List of 2005, Maramotti was one of the world's richest men with a fortune of $2.1 billion [4]. Maramotti passed away at 78 on January 12 of 2005. Max Mara remains as one of the most influential brands in fashion today and Maramotti's two sons are now the chief executives, managers, and artistic directors.

The fashion house's major competitors include Armani, Donna Karan, and Gucci.
