Max Hess

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Max Hess was a noted professional musician. He played first horn in the Frankfurt, Gürzenich/Cologne, Liszt Society, Boston and Cincinnati orchestras. While first horn in Cologne he played in the premiere performance of Gustav Mahler's Fifth Symphony.

As a pupil of Gumpert, Max Hess first studied the art of the hand horn, before playing a valved horn, as was typical in the 19th century. He used a single F horn, throughout his student years (1896-99), his orchestral career in Europe, and in the beginning of his tenure with the Boston Symphony (1905-25). He retired from the Cincinnati Symphony in 1937.
