Max Evans is a fictional character from the television series Roswell, portrayed by actor Jason Behr.

Max is an alien-human hybrid, and a clone of the fallen king of his home world Antar. His people were able to use his DNA to create the alien hybrids, and they took them to Earth to hide them from his enemy Kivar. Their alien craft crashed in Roswell in 1947 and the army took the alien pods that Max, Isabel, Michael and Tess were in into a base. They were saved by an air force pilot that Michael would eventually meet. They were taken to a new ship that was hidden in a rock formation to keep them safe. Max "hatched" from the pods in 1989 with his sister and Michael, but he and his sister were found together, wandering in the desert. Michael stayed hidden and saw when they were found. They were found by the Evans family who adopted them.
Max is very introverted and people can see him as a shy/loser guy but this isn't really his character. Being a hybrid forced him into hiding himself behind a tree most of the time. So, his character is not so simple to understand and only in some rare occasions we can see his true self exit from him and we can see him smile and be carefree.
He's the leader of the group that gave him that role even before knowing that he was the cloneofthe king of antar. Mirrored by his healing power, Max is a kind soul, very protective for people he loves. He always wants to have things under control and he doesn't like changes when they put his loved ones in danger. Sometimes this quality can be his flaw too since sometimes his protectiveness leads him into making choices that can make things worse than how they were. He hates the unknown and he hates to hurt who he loves especially Liz. He's sweet and caring but strong and passionate too. He always takes the responsibility of his own actions and mistakes without putting it on someone else shoulders. He can apologize to people when he feels that he need to do because he was wrong and he made a mistake hurting someone. He's humble and even if he's the king he never really saw himself as one. At the end of Roswell he abdicated his throne making the choice to be just himself, Max Evans.

Max has special healing powers which he has used at various times throughout the show, the most notable incident being when he saved Liz from a bullet wound. He is also able to change the molecular structure of items, as can the rest of the hybrids. Max is able to produce a force field which can protect himself and others from being hit by an object, or in one case when Liz was falling, from hitting the floor.

We first see Max eating at the Crashdown Cafe. He obviously has an attraction towards the main waitress Liz Parker. The truth is that the he's been in love with her since he was just a little boy and he saw her for the first time at school. Maria De Luca mentions that he has been staring at Liz the whole time he has been there. That day Liz is accidentally shot by two men who have started fighting. Max rushes to her aide and miraculously heals her. Then he escapes in his jeep with Michael. At school Max is confronted by Liz and he confesses to her that he is an alien after she shows him the handprint that he has left on her. He says that his sister Isabel Evans and Michael Guerin are also aliens. He asks her to keep it a secret, as his life, and the lives of the others, are in her hands. Understanding that he did need her trust since she was scared, created a connection with her making her see his soul and all his inner feelings especially his love for her since he was just a child. After seeing his amazing soul the girl understood Max's true character and she made the decision to protect Max and his friends from the very beginning. They manage to keep Max's and the others' secret under wraps.
They grow very close and he is very understanding when Liz tells Maria about him and the others. His involvement with Liz, and their mutual infatuation, causes her boyfriend at the time, Kyle Valenti, to grow very jealous. At one point Kyle's friends beat Max up, without Kyle knowing about it. When her grandma Claudia dies, Liz starts to realize that she was not only attracted to Max but she was in love with him and she couldn't date Kyle anymore.
Max gets a job at the local UFO center and is taken under the curator’s wing. It turns out that the silver handprint which Max had left on Liz, had been spotted on a number of murder victims in the 1950s. The murderer was never caught, which leads Max to suspect that there is a fourth alien out there in the world. Max (during a Roswell crash convention) is nearly killed by a man named Hubble, who is an alien hunter. Hubble is intent on revenge after it is found that the fourth alien had killed his wife and unborn child. Sheriff Jim Valenti saves Max's life.
Max and Liz grow ever closer and after their first kiss they go on a date. But, when Michael is hurt by a mysterious illness, Max reluctantly calls things off because he is afraid of getting too attached and hurting Liz because he's an alien and he doesn't know his origins and the effect of his closeness on her and he can't bear to hurt her in any way. But after Liz wins a local radio station's competition for a blind date, Max gets jealous. Max and Kyle get drunk and Max confesses his feelings for Liz, only to sober up at the last minute and run off. But in the episode "Sexual Healing", repressed passion explodes between them, he and Liz get together, and Liz finds that when they kiss, she gets flashbacks of his past. They later find an orb from his planet thanks to these visions. They begin a relationship that is soon tested when a new girl named Tess Harding arrives. He begins to suspect that she is the fourth alien (Nacedo) when he has hallucinations about her. Max confronts Tess about the visions in the desert. But he realizes that she is in fact one of them, an alien-human hybrid, and not Nacedo like they thought in the beginning.
Her father figure is Nasedo, the supposed murderer, and he is also their protector. But Nacedo kidnaps Liz making her believe that he's Max and when Max goes after them in order to save Liz, he's abducted by a special branch of the FBI headed by the elusive Special Agent Pierce. He tortures Max to get information out of him about the alien device that Max and Liz had found earlier. But before Pierce can get any information out of him, he is rescued by Nasedo and Michael. In turn they manage to kidnap Pierce and interrogate him at the UFO center. However Kyle Valenti sets him free and Max is nearly shot as a gunfight breaks out between Pierce and the aheriff. The gunfire results in the sheriff inadvertently shooting Kyle who had been hiding behind a curtain. Michael kills Pierce using a new alien power which seems to have burned all of Pierce's organs from the inside. After finding Kyle wounded, Max saves his life using the same method that he had used on Liz at the start of the season. Thankful, Sheriff Valenti gives him his word that he will protect Max, Isabel and Michael.
Max goes to the ship hidden in the caves and they discover their history. An image of their mother comes up and tells them that they are the clones of the royal four of their home world Antar. Tess and Max were married, Isabel was his sister and a promised spouse of Michael that was his second in command. Upon hearing this Liz runs away as she realizes that his destiny and responsibility are far bigger than her. He loves her and is reluctant to let her go but she says that there is too much in their way and leaves.

Max finds himself the leader of the group; he doesn't like his new role but firmly takes control of the group after discovering his past as a king. The others now awkwardly look up to him and go to him in search of advice, except for Michael who still acts out and does things his own way. At the beginning of season two, Max's relationship with Liz is awkward. He still loves her and declares to her that he will keep fighting for her and will never give up on them. His role as the leader also proves to be an obstacle as he finds out about power he never knew he had and the responsibility that comes with that power. But he is rocked when Nasedo is murdered and proclaims that the "skins" have arrived. Worried by this, he and the gang agree to sit tight. They target Liz's new boss, Congresswoman Whitaker, who had had a relationship with Special Agent Pierce, and do some reconnaissance on her. It is later revealed that the Congresswoman was in fact a "skin".
It is around this time that he tries to resurrect his relationship with Liz, but she rejects his advances. He only gives up on her when he catches Liz in bed with Kyle Valenti, believing that they had been together. The truth is that it's all a setup created by Liz when the future version of Max comes back from the future saying that she had to make his present self stop loving her because their love will be the cause of the end of the world. Future Max and Future Liz sacrifice their love in order to make Tess stay in Roswell (in their timeline she left after Max and Liz cemented their relationship). Since she was obsessed with Max and she would stay only if Max will give her a chance.
For most of season two, Max is only a friend for Tess and he still tries to be with Liz, never stopping loving her even if he doesn't know the truth about Kyle. But when their friend Alex dies and his friendship with Liz is compromised by her research for Alex's alien killer that Max can't accept, he has his first personal crisis about who he really is, losing his balance. When Tess starts to help him into remembering his past Max is confused about himself and he starts to act out of character. making his friends dislike him, especially Liz and Isabel. Thanks to Tess' influence he starts to think that maybe he's just too blind to accept the truth and the truth is that his life isn't real and Tess with her obsession about the past is right. When he realizes that he has really lost everything, especially Liz, in a moment of weakness he sleeps with Tess who is the only one with him and she seems to know the answers that he can't find. Since he was supposed to love her because it was his destiny, he tries to feel something for her using a physical way since they never were emotionally involved with each other and he always saw her as a stranger. The day after their night together he just realize his mistake and how they're really far away and he can't love her no matter if his previous self (Zan) had feelings for his wife or not. When Tess tell him that she's pregnant with his son and she doesn't want to get rid of their baby, Max takes his responsibility staying with the woman for duty even if he still loves only Liz Parker.
At the end of the season, Tess mindwarps him into believing that the baby is sick and he can't survive in the earth's atmosphere so they need to return home to Antar in order to save him. Thanks to the alien destiny book that Alex translated before dying, Max and his friends find the way to return home using the Granlith. Eventually before it's too late, Liz, Maria and Kyle discover that Tess killed Alex. Max confronts her and he realizes that the pregnancy was all a setup in order to force him and the other aliens to return home. Nacedo made a deal with Kivar 40 years ago that Tess had to get pregnant by Max's heir and then deliver Max and his friends to Kivar that would have killed them finally deleting the royal family. Angry, he wanted to kill her but then he stopped realizing that she was still carrying his son. He let her go to Antar in order to save the baby that he still thinks can't survive on Earth.
He regroups with Liz and the others on the mountainside. Max then tells Liz that in his life he was wrong about many things but not loving her. They embrace and the season ends with Max saying that he must save his son.
