Max Dugan, the long lost father of Nora McPhee (Marsha Mason), drops in on the her as various trials and tribulation have befallen in the prior few days. With him he brings some promises and the news of his impending death. He also meets his grandson (Matthew Broderick) for the first time who is charmed by Dugan. Donald Sutherland plays the police officer who helps Nora after her car is stolen and becomes her boyfriend in the process.
