[edit] Character History
Max has previously harbored unrequited romantic feelings for his stepsister Mandy and a relationship with Anna that saw him take on a fatherly role towards her baby son, Charlie. Caring for Charlie helped prepare Max for looking after his half-brother Tom full time, which he has done since the death of his father and stepmother. Max's close friend Sam "O.B." O'Brien helps him with this.
[edit] Clare
He is currently married to employee Clare who, unbeknownst to Max. is manipulating and using him for her own personal gain while at the same time driving a wedge between him and OB. Due to this he appears to have turned evil while he is just angry at the stories his girlfriend has told him about Mel. Clare appears to recently wear the pants in the relationship. He married Clare, very soon in their relationship, because he thought that it would make Mandy and Tony happier.
Clare continues to manipulate Max, purchasing a one way plane ticket to Malaga as she plans to leave Hollyoaks. She also persuaded Max to open a joint bank account, which she will presumably empty. When OB revealed to her that he knew her father is still alive (as he overheared her on the phone to her dad) Clare starts to panic. When OB goes to find Max to tell him of this phone call, Clare rushes to the loft safe where she takes a packet of drugs, stops OB, and slyly plants them in his pocket. He leaves, she calls the police, and OB is put in prison. He misses Max's stag night and so Clare leads him to believe OB can't accept their marriage and so therefore he will not be attending the wedding. Max agrees, and Clare once again has saved herself from Max unravelling the truth. In the middle of the wedding, OB opens the church doors and tells Max he's making a huge mistake. OB tells Max about Clare's plane ticket, but Clare finds another way to weasel out of the truth. Clare makes Max believe that she was beaten by her father.
[edit] Dying?
Max found out that Warren and Clare were taking cocaine, an argument followed and Max went in the office and also took cocaine. Later that night in the club Max was talking to Warren and Clare when he collapsed from a heart attack and was taken into hospital. OB rushes to visit Max.
Max is concious but OB thinks Clare has something to do with his heart attack. Max returns home from hospital and is bedridden whilst he is recouperating. Clare is looking after him, however she is tampering with his medication, in the hope it will trigger another heart attack.
OB's suspicions that Clare is trying to kill Max are heightened once again as she takes Max and Tom to a secluded country cottage for Christmas. Max slowly suffers as Clare waits hopefully for his death. Whilst she is playing football outside with Tom though, Max crawls over to his pills and discovers they are all empty.
Max is then tricked by Clare to jumping into a freezing lake in Cumbria, as his wife says that Tom has fallen in. Max begins to drown, though OB comes to his rescue and the paramedics arrive soon after, along with the police who arrest Clare.
Max is released from hospital into the care of Tony, Dom and OB. As Max and OB vow to fulfil Tom's Christmas wish by becoming friends again the future is looking brighter, however a dark cloud dampens the mood as they learn that the police have let Clare go free. Clare has terrorised Max's life by threatining to report him to child services if he doesn't give her the deed to The Loft. After a long feud between them, Max finally gave over the deed and Clare finally left him alone.
[edit] Model Tom
Max is now trying to raise money for Toms school trip to the science museum. He and O.B briefly took over Dog's Dinners outside Tom's school. But after being harassed by paparazzi for selling junk food to kids, They stopped the business as Max "doesn't want to be responsible for a generation of fat kids". But after a modeling agency spotted Tom's photo in the papers thet wanted him to be a model. Max and O.B went along with it and are still trying to raise the money.
