Mawanella

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mawanella is a small town in the central hills of Sri Lanka, the majority of the people in the town are Muslims but other communities do live here. The town made headlines when a Sinhala mob attacked and set fire the towns major muslims owned businesses and a muslim mosque. Despite being a majority muslim town a Buddha statue has been placed prominently in the town center while tape recorded spiritual chants are played on a loud speaker throughout the day from dawn to dusk. A classic example, where over 100 years of peaceful co-habitation between two communities is being ruined by short sighted racists who unfortunately have obtained the approval of the state. These racists fortunately don't represent the majority of the Sinhala community.
