The Maverick Hunters (Irregular Hunters イレギュラーハンター Iregyurā Hantā in Japan) is an organization from the science-fiction video game series Mega Man X created to hunt down and terminate Mavericks. Known for hunting Mavericks (Irregulars), the Maverick Hunters continue to hunt down Mavericks sent by Sigma, the current Maverick leader and former Maverick Hunter.

[edit] Origins

After Dr. Cain created the first Reploids from Mega Man X's designs, incidents began with a few of these Reploids attacking or killing humans. This alarmed the government, and they, along with Dr. Cain, created the Maverick Hunters to stop what they called Mavericks before they could cause harm.

[edit] Units

Since the Doppler rebellion, the Maverick Hunters were divided into units based on their purpose, designs, or type of combat they perform. Not all of the Maverick Hunter Units have been specified, but some units that have been mentioned in the games are:

  • 0th Stealth Unit / Special Forces Unit 0 (Led by Zero)
  • 4th Overland Unit
  • 6th Armada (Ocean Unit)
  • 7th Air Cavalry
  • 8th Armored Division
  • 9th Special Forces
  • 13th Polar Region Unit
  • 14th Grapple Combat/Melee Combat Unit
  • 17th Elite Unit / Troop Unit 17 (Previously lead by Sigma, then by X. Vile was a member for a time)

Shortly after Signas was appointed the new Supreme Commander of the Maverick Hunters, the Sigma Virus was unleashed in mass amounts (X5) and many Reploids, including many Maverick Hunters, went maverick. This resulted in the Maverick Hunters losing more than half of their numbers. Due to this, Signas was forced to dissolve the units, resulting in every remaining Hunter acting under a single command independently. It has remained this way ever since.

[edit] Maverick Hunters gone Maverick

Maverick Hunters are by no means immune to the effects of the Maverick Virus (the only exception is that Zero is immune to some types of Maverick Viruses) or simply rebeling against humans. In fact, it happens quite often, and former Maverick Hunters are the most dangerous type of Mavericks. Some former Maverick Hunters gone Maverick include:
