K. Maurice Johannessen served as a California State Senator from 1993 until 2002. He was elected to the State senate after Mike Thompson vacated the 4th senate district seat mid-term to run for another Senate seat that had just been vacated. Johannessen served on the Redding city council prior to his terms in the state senate. In the Republican primary to be elected senator, he defeated former 7th district Assemblywoman Bev Hansen.
