Vietnamese pond turtle, Annam Leaf Turtle or Mauremys annamensis is a species of turtle. It is listed as critically endangered in the IUCN Red List 2006. [1]

Distribution: Endemic to a small area in central Vietnam. [1] It was reportedly abundant in the 1930s but recent field surveys failed to locate any individuals in the wild. [2] In 2006 a site where Mauremys annamensis still exist in the wild was found. [3] Despite its rarity specimens of Mauremys annamensis have been observed for sale in China and Hong Kong and have been illicitly imported into the U.S.A.. A small population of Mauremys annamensis are being breed on Hainan Island in southern China. [2], as well as at the Cuc Phuong Turtle Conservation Center located in Cuc Phuong National Park in northern Vietnam. [4]

Distinguishing Features: Head dark with three or four yellow stripes down the side. Plastron firmly attached, yellow or orange, with black blotch on each scute. [1]

Key Threats: Hunting and trade. [1]
