[edit] MSUM alumni list

Ahh interesting question Alex. I am from ND, transplanted to AZ. I've been watching you two for quite some time. You both seem to be making significant contributions to the wiki. I'm a graduate of MSUM, and tonight I was browsing through its wiki article, and noticed 2 alums listed with a bum wiki-link Leif Enger, and Lin Enger. I knew Matt has made the majority of the contributions to it so I was actually coming to his page tonight to expose myself for who I really am, and to ask if he added these two faceless "notable" alums, that I have never heard of. I would be interested in joining a "Triumverate" of sorts, and to work on a peer review team with you fellas. Hit me up with what you think-

(Opes 06:35, 4 January 2006 (UTC))

I live in Grand Forks in the winter and Mesa, Arizona in the summer. So I think I live around where you live

[edit] NDSU

Hello. At first I was about to write a complete rebuttal, but then read that you (or somebody else) included an update with the Wisconsin win.

To respond to your comment, it is correct we do not know each other. However, almost anybody not related to North Dakota in anyway is a neutral party, which includes me, as I have never stated the words "North Dakota State University" nor do I know anybody, nor know anybody that knows anybody, in North Dakota. I am from Texas, go to school in Michigan, have friends at school in various states, and direct family in Illlinois, Michigan, Texas, and Mississippi. And in regards to bias, you are FROM the University of North Dakota--NDSU foremost archrival (as far as i've read, although the difference in division now i've heard has put a strain on that). Therefore, by commenting that an extrememly major upset by that school is not important, in your opinion, and you're FROM UND, then that is almost the exact definition of bias: someone who dislikes something makes a comment in negative favor of the stated something.

The upset was the foremost pinnacle of NDSU sports as stated by the NDSU president. Also, there is no basis for me saying that i do not know you therefore cannot comment on the state of being bias when (from my/the generic point of view, it was fact that the win was important, and) you have conceded now that you were previously incorrect in your opinion by allowing the information to remain in the article.

Hello anonymous poster! Thats the beauty of the revert. Now please see WP:CIVIL. If you continue your personal attacks against this user, I will seek mediation from an admin. I'm posting this on your user talk page as well, to make sure you do not continue this behaviour. (Opes 22:36, 23 January 2006 (UTC))

[edit] An Esperanzial note

As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)

Other than that, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wish you an Esperanzially good new WikiYear :D Thank you! --Celestianpower háblame 16:57, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] RfA

I nominated you. (Opes 22:21, 31 January 2006 (UTC))

See here

{{subst:RfA|User=MatthewUND|Ending=February 6, 2006 4:15 central time|Description=Significant contributor with 3290 edits so far. ~~~~}}

No prob man. I figure you and Alexwcovington would be both good canidates. I'm drumming up some support, I know a few admins that in the next couple days might take a look at your RfA. Of anything I asked of them was constructive suggestions for you. (Opes 18:54, 1 February 2006 (UTC))

[edit] Fargo

Geez, I somehow thought Klosterman started with a C. Forgive me, I was tired. (Opes 18:58, 2 February 2006 (UTC))

[edit] Adminship, etc

I'm sure you'll get there eventually. As for myself, I'd certainly appreciate the gesture, but there would be many of the same issues as with you as I have not exactly been wildly active in the overall community either... but I'm going to work on that and maybe in a couple of months it won't be so bad.

What we should do, though, if defintely get WikiProject North Dakota off the ground. There are a few more users now than there were during the summer, perhaps now is the time. --AlexWCovington (talk) 21:40, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Martha Stewart

I believe the external Alexis Stewart link that shows Alexis has been accused of stealing an idea certainly belongs in the Martha Stewart Wikipedia. It is Martha Stewart's Company that is being sued. The radio show is owned by Martha's company. This is surely relevant.

[edit] Thank you for the information MatthewUND

I'm not quite sure how to reach you MatthewUND, but I did receive the information and I would like to thank you for the explaination. 142.68.196.145 05:45, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

*Thanks for your help! I really appreciate it! --Driken 19:37, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wahpeton

Wahpeton actually is the most industrialised city in ND. It has been for years. I will get you a reference.

(Opes 21:01, 3 February 2006 (UTC))

[edit] Dean Blais

You should do an article on Dean Blais. I just know hes a hockey coach. (Opes 21:45, 3 February 2006 (UTC))

[edit] Your RfA

Your adminship nomination didn't achieve consensus. Please look at the reasons voters opposed your nomination and this will be a big aid to succeeding in the future. Many initially failed nominees have gone on to be admins later. Cheers, Cecropia 22:01, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] North Dakota attraction

the attractions part is necessary because the state needs as much help as much as it can get. I am a former resident, I have no idea why but I miss the state and I'm trying to move back -- (unsigned comment by Gooby)

[edit] Another Esperanzial note...

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Yours, as ever, Esperanzially,

[edit] Thanks for fixing the picture!

I appreciate you adjusting the picture on the Grand Forks AFB page. I am really new at this and am still trying to get the hang of it. I lived in GFAFB from 1997-2002, when my dad served on base. I am currently living in San Diego, CA, and still like to look back at the history and changes to GFAFB and Grand Forks itself. Keep up the good work of keeping Grand Forks information up to date, I will enjoy looking at it when ever I miss the cold winters of North Dakota. Again, thanks for the hard work and helping to improve Wikipedia. (unsigned comment by Nehrams2020)

[edit] RfA

Sorry to see that your RfA didn't quite make it - i was pulling for you. I'm sure that you'll make a good admin someday, and I would be happy to nominate you next time you want to try. Keep up the good work :-) Alhutch 06:55, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

What I was trying to do was put the Scheels logo in the info box on the Scheels article ,but I cant get it to work. Since you seem to be so good at this would you mind doing that?

[edit] This Could Work Records

Hi, Matt, I was wondering if you could help me out with this AFD: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/This Could Work Records

They're small, they're new, but Category:2005 establishments has at least half a dozen record labels that never got an AFD nom. Now, I wouldn't have started an article on this topic myself, but since Lonegunmun decided to start an account to write it, I feel we shouldn't be biting newcomers... especially since the subject matter is valid and deals with my hometown music scene, which particularly piques my interest.

I'm tired of Wikipedia, and the world at large, looking down its nose at small-town culture. Wikipedia needs articles like this. The world is not just huge internet presences and large corporations in megalopolises. --AlexWCovington (talk) 19:34, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:OKellyHallUND.JPG

Thanks for uploading Image:OKellyHallUND.JPG. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you.

- - - - - -

Just pick the correct copyright template (see above link) and apply it to the image in place of the current 'no license' template. That should prevent someone from deleting it. --Adam Clark(User_Talk) (email) 05:25, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image Tagging for Image:MerrifieldHallUND.JPG

Thanks for uploading Image:MerrifieldHallUND.JPG. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

[edit] Surprised

Hi, Matthew.

You don't know me, so it's likely you won't care what I think, but on a wandering internet foray I came across your post regaring "notable" people being added to/dropped from your "notables" list of alumni, and I was suprised to find you thought Leif Enger "hardly notable." Yet, Kevin Sorbo, who has been media-dead for about five years, is, apparently, "notable."

I guess I'm curious about your reasoning. Are the literary endeavors of alumni less "important" than acting endeavors? "Peace Like a River" was a bestseller, was reviewed in People Magazine, and still sits on the shelves of Barnes and Noble. How is that not notable?

And who is it who decides what "notable" is? (And how in the world is some doofus playing the part of Hercules on a TV series any more notable than a best-selling literary novelist?)

Thanks for your time,

Kristen Tsetsi (IP: 24.149.34.161)

Kristen, thanks for the comment. I would usually leave this response on your talk page, but you are unregistered so I don't think you would ever see my response if I left it on the talk page of the IP you were previously listed as. If you had looked through the history of the MSUM article, you would notice that I never removed Leif Enger from the list of notable alumni. I should let you know that I have never watched any of Mr. Sorbo's work, but it is wrong for you to say that he is non-notable. Enger and Sorbo, albeit famous for very different reasons, are both notable and worthy of inclusion. I will add Mr. Enger to the list again and revert other users' attempts to remove it if they should do so in the future. I should also add that, while I haver never read Peace Like a River, I am an English minor at UND and most certainly do not have an uninformed or poor view of literature. Thanks again for your concern. --MatthewUND(talk) 23:14, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
It was in fact Opes that removed Leif Enger from the list, along with Lin Enger. This was after a request by Opes to make a verdict of their validity for inclusion. Matt's comment on User talk:Opes was not a flat "hardly notable", but a thoughtful paragraph featuring Either way, I don't think that either are very notable. Certainly Lin Enger isn't worthy of inclusion.
Under the same circumstances, I would have removed them both, not out of any intentional malice but because two redlinked alumnists bearing the same last name looks suspicious.
Ms. Tsetsi, I applaud your interest in Wikipedia and invite you to Create an account to more fully join our community of editors, and share your knowledge with the world at large. --AlexWCovington (talk) 06:37, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.

[edit] Grand Forks, North Dakota

I've nominated the Grand Forks article as a good article, it's less stringent than what's needed for a Featured Article. Considering the response from the previous peer review lead to substantial positive change in the article, I think there's a good shot of getting Good Article status, or at least some more feedback on how to develop the page. --AlexWCovington (talk) 21:14, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Old Skool Esperanzial note

Since this isn't the result of an AC meeting, I have decided to go Old Skool. This note is to remind you that the elections are taking place now and will end at 23:50 UTC on 2006-04-29. Please vote here. Thanks. --Celestianpower háblame 20:42, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
Stressbusters
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
  5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.

[edit] Image:Downtown Grand Forks, ND (circa 1946).jpg

Your work on Grand Forks articles is very much appreciated, you've obviously done a lot of good work on them. This particular picture though seems to be copyrighted to the Grand Forks Herald, and being from 1946 it seems highly unlikely that the copyright will have expired. It also doesn't seem to be fair use. Can you do anything to confirm the picture's copyright status? TheGrappler 16:49, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

Cheers for getting back to me - if you have any pre-1923 postcards they'd be great! You can get the image erased from wikipedia by putting {{db-author}} in the image page. Happy wikying, TheGrappler 17:19, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] "stub"

It seems to me that one thing one might think about in deciding whether to label an article a "stub" is this: Warsaw, North Dakota is not the sort of place about which one would expect the article to become very long. The one that's there does not seem unsatisfactorily short even if it could be made better by making it much longer. Michael Hardy 23:48, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Sabbatical

I have been on a type of Sabbatical leave I guess. From time to time I would come in and fix something here and there. But since the semester ended I have done nothing but work. =/

[edit] A short Esperanzial update

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.
